Overview

The Johnford ST-60CX+B+C+Y is the shortest machine of the ST Turn-Mill group: a 60° slant-bed lathe with 1,200 mm (47.2 in) between centers on which the turret is replaced by a B-axis milling/turning spindle and a tool magazine.

It keeps a full-size turning spindle. The chuck is 510 mm (20 in), the nose A2-15, the bore Ø152 mm (6 in) with Ø139 mm (5.5 in) bar capacity, and a 30 / 37 kW (40.2 / 49.6 hp) motor drives it through an auto 4-speed gearbox to 1,500 rpm. Swing over the bed is Ø1,200 mm (47.2 in) and maximum turning diameter Ø800 mm (31.5 in).

The tool spindle is an HSK-A100 unit rated 38 / 62 kW (51.0 / 83.1 hp) and 252 / 411 Nm (186 / 303 lb-ft) at up to 6,000 rpm. That is more power than the turning spindle has, which says how this machine is meant to be used: heavy milling, drilling and boring on a turned part, at any angle between -110° and +90° of B. Y travel is ±100 mm (±3.9 in).

With 24 tools the magazine is the smallest of the six ST Turn-Mill columns; the ST-160FX+B+C+Y has 40. Machine weight is 15,000 kg (33,069 lb), and the footprint is 5,532 x 2,270 mm (217.8 x 89.4 in).

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does +B+C+Y mean on the ST-60CX+B+C+Y?

The machine has a B axis (the swivelling milling/turning spindle, -110°~+90°), a C axis on the main spindle with 0.001° resolution, and a Y axis with ±100 mm (±3.9 in) of travel, in addition to X and Z.

02 How strong is the milling spindle of the ST-60CX+B+C+Y?

38 / 62 kW (51.0 / 83.1 hp) and 252 / 411 Nm (186 / 303 lb-ft), with a top speed of 6,000 rpm and an HSK-A100 taper. CAPTO C8 for the milling/turning spindle and ATC is listed as an option.

03 How many tools does the ST-60CX+B+C+Y carry?

24 in this column of the table. Tools can be Ø125 mm (4.9 in) with adjacent tools or Ø200 mm (7.9 in) without, up to 400 mm (15.7 in) long and 15 kg (33 lb). ATC systems with 60, 80, 100 or more tools are listed as available.

04 Is 5-axis simultaneous machining possible on the ST-60CX+B+C+Y?

The standard accessory list names a 4+1 axis machining package. A simultaneous 5-axis machining package is on the optional list. The B axis indexes every 5° as standard, or 2.5° as an option, and can be clamped at a free angle by hydraulic brake.
