Hyundai WIA HS5000

The Mazak HCN-5000 and HS5000 target the same market segment with similar specs. The Mazak offers MAZATROL conversational programming, a larger service network, and higher resale value. The HS5000 counters with significantly lower pricing ($180K vs $250K+ for the Mazak) and slightly more travel on the Y-axis. For shops where capital cost is the primary driver, the HS5000 is hard to beat. For shops valuing service support and resale, the Mazak is worth the premium.

The HS5000 can machine aluminum aerospace components effectively with its 14,000 RPM spindle and generous travel. However, most aerospace shops requiring NADCAP or AS9100 certification prefer Makino, Mazak, or DMG Mori machines due to their established track record in aerospace and the process validation documentation available. For non-certified aerospace subcontract work, the HS5000 is capable of the required tolerances.

Beyond the standard 2-pallet system, Hyundai WIA offers multi-pallet pool configurations for extended unattended operation. Third-party pallet pool systems from Fastems and Liebherr are also compatible. A standard 6-pallet linear pool adds approximately $150,000-$200,000 to the base machine cost. For lights-out operation, the combination of expanded tool magazine (120 tools) and pallet pool provides 8-16 hours of unattended runtime.

The standard BT 40 spindle runs 14,000 RPM with 22 kW power. A BT 50 option provides higher rigidity and torque for heavy ferrous cutting at the expense of maximum RPM (typically 8,000-10,000 RPM). Through-spindle coolant at 20 or 70 bar is available as an option and is highly recommended for production drilling and tapping operations.

Hyundai WIA machines typically retain 40-50% of their purchase price after 5 years, compared to 55-65% for equivalent Mazak or Okuma machines. However, the lower initial purchase price means the absolute depreciation in dollars is often similar or less. A $180K HS5000 retaining 45% loses approximately $99K in value, while a $260K Mazak retaining 60% loses $104K — nearly identical in absolute terms.

The HS5000 weighs 11,500 kg and requires a reinforced concrete foundation of at least 300 mm (12 in) thickness. Hyundai WIA provides foundation drawings with anchor bolt locations as part of the pre-installation package. Vibration isolation pads are recommended but not always required depending on the facility's ground conditions. Most installations do not require a dedicated pit or special foundation engineering beyond standard reinforced concrete.
