Overview
The Hurco HM1700Ri is Hurco's largest and most powerful horizontal machining center, built for heavy-duty production work on oversized parts. With 1,700 mm (66.9 in) of X travel, a 75 hp CAT 50 spindle, and a 800 mm (31.5 in) rotary table rated for 2,000 kg (4,410 lb), this machine targets shops that need serious material removal capability on large steel and cast iron workpieces.
Travels are 1,700 x 1,200 x 900 mm (66.9 x 47.2 x 35.4 in) — an enormous work envelope for a horizontal machining center. The fixed table measures 1,651 x 838 mm (67 x 36 in) with a 1,360 kg (3,000 lb) capacity, while the integrated 800 mm rotary table handles 2,000 kg of rotating load with full 360-degree continuous B-axis rotation.
The spindle runs 8,000 RPM through a CAT 50 taper, delivering 56 kW (75 hp) of peak power with a massive 445.1 Nm (328.7 ft-lbs) of torque at 1,200 RPM. This is the most powerful spindle in Hurco's entire lineup by a wide margin. CAT 50 toolholding provides the rigidity needed for large-diameter face mills, boring bars, and roughing endmills that would overwhelm a 40-taper spindle.
The 30-tool ATC handles CAT 50 tooling with 120 mm (4.7 in) max diameter, 400 mm (15.7 in) max length, and 20 kg (44 lb) max weight — substantially larger tools than any Hurco vertical can accommodate. Tool change time is 3.7 seconds.
Rapids run 30 m/min (1,181 ipm) on X, 20 m/min (787 ipm) on Y, and 30 m/min (1,171 ipm) on Z. B-axis rapid is 50 RPM. The horizontal spindle orientation provides natural chip evacuation and enables tombstone fixturing for multi-part production.
At 18,770 kg (41,381 lb), this is by far the heaviest machine in Hurco's catalog. Floor space is 6,034 x 4,646 mm (238 x 183 in) and power draw is 94 KVA. WinMax control handles programming from conversational to full G-code.
New pricing runs $450,000-$600,000. The HM1700Ri competes with horizontal machining centers from Mazak, Okuma, and DMG MORI for heavy-duty production applications.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 56 kW (75 hp) CAT 50 spindle with 445 Nm torque handles the heaviest cuts in steel and cast iron without flinching
- 1,700 x 1,200 x 900 mm travel envelope accommodates the largest parts in Hurco's entire lineup
- 2,000 kg rotary table load supports heavy steel parts and substantial tombstone fixturing for production
- Horizontal spindle orientation provides natural chip evacuation and enables 4-sided tombstone production
- 800 mm rotary table with 360-degree continuous B-axis enables indexed production across multiple faces
- WinMax conversational programming brings Hurco's ease-of-use advantage to the horizontal machining center segment
Limitations
- 6,034 x 4,646 mm footprint and 18,770 kg weight require dedicated floor space and reinforced foundations
- 94 KVA power draw demands substantial electrical infrastructure — typically 200+ amp 480V service
- 30-tool ATC is modest for a production HMC — many competing horizontals offer 60-120+ tools
- 8,000 RPM spindle speed limits high-speed aluminum machining and smaller-diameter tool performance
- WinMax control in the HMC segment faces stiff competition from Fanuc, Mazatrol, and OSP controls with larger user bases

Frequently Asked Questions
01
New pricing runs $450,000-$600,000 depending on options and configuration. Through-spindle coolant, probing, and full chip management are essential at this machine size. Used HM1700Ri machines are rare but trade in the $250,000-$400,000 range.
02
The Mazak HCN-5000 is a smaller machine (730 mm X travel) with pallet changer automation, priced at $300-450K. The HM1700Ri offers 2.3x the X travel and more spindle power, targeting much larger parts. These machines serve different segments — the HCN-5000 for medium-part production volume, the HM1700Ri for large-part capability.
03
The standard HM1700Ri doesn't include a pallet changer system. Hurco offers pallet automation as an option or through integration partners. For unattended production, a pallet pool or FMS system can be retrofitted, but plan on $100,000-$200,000 additional investment.
04
For many applications, 30 tools covers the requirements. However, competing production HMCs commonly offer 60-120+ tools for extended unattended operation. If your production plans require many different tools or long unattended runs, the 30-tool ATC may require mid-shift tool changes that reduce utilization.
05
A reinforced concrete pad at least 300 mm thick, specifically engineered for the 18,770 kg machine weight plus dynamic forces from heavy cutting and 2,000 kg rotating table loads. Foundation cost alone can run $15,000-$30,000. Hurco provides detailed foundation drawings with anchor bolt layouts.
06
The HM1700Ri provides enclosed machining with chip management, automatic tool changing, and CNC control in a more compact footprint than floor-type boring mills. For parts that fit the 67x36 inch table, it's more productive than manual boring mill operation. For even larger parts or more flexibility, a floor-type boring mill provides unlimited part size.
