Overview

The HNK VTC-10/12F is the entry size of the VTC vertical turning centers: a 1,000 mm (39.4 in) table with a C-axis, plus a live milling spindle in the ram. HNK's point for the series is that an indexing table and a live spindle let the machine mill and tap after turning, so a part is finished in a single setup.

On this size the milling spindle runs to about 2,500 rpm on an A.C 11/15 kW (14.8/20.1 hp) motor, cont/30min, with an ISO 50 taper. That is the smallest milling motor in the VTC range, suited to bolt circles, keyways and light face milling on a turned part and not to heavy stock removal. For contouring and positioning the table turns at 0 to 3 rpm as a C-axis and indexes in 0.001 degree increments.

As a lathe it mirrors the NT-10/12F: 1,250 mm (49.2 in) swing, 800 mm (31.5 in) turning height, about 450 rpm in two steps, 4,500 kg (9,921 lb) of table load, an A.C 30/37 kW (40.2/49.6 hp) table motor and a fixed type cross rail. The ram is larger, 240 x 240 mm (9.4 x 9.4 in) against 200 x 200 mm (7.9 x 7.9 in) on the NT-10/12F, to house the spindle.

Travels are -200 to +795 mm (-7.9 to +31.3 in) in X and 750 mm (29.5 in) in Z. Fanuc 31i-B and Siemens 840D are the listed controls.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Live milling spindle, ISO 50, to about 2,500 rpm
  • C-axis table: 0 to 3 rpm with 0.001 degree indexing
  • About 450 rpm for turning, the fastest table in the VTC series
  • 240 x 240 mm (9.4 x 9.4 in) ram on a 1,000 mm (39.4 in) table machine

Limitations

  • Milling motor is A.C 11/15 kW (14.8/20.1 hp), the smallest in the series
  • Fixed cross rail and 800 mm (31.5 in) of turning height
  • 4,500 kg (9,921 lb) table load

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What can the VTC-10/12F do that the NT-10/12F cannot?

Mill, drill and tap. The VTC-10/12F adds a milling spindle (ISO 50, about 2,500 rpm, A.C 11/15 kW (14.8/20.1 hp)) and a C-axis table with 0.001 degree indexing. Table size, swing, turning height and the 4,500 kg (9,921 lb) load are the same as on the NT-10/12F.

02 How strong is the milling spindle on the VTC-10/12F?

The motor for the milling spindle is rated A.C 11/15 kW (14.8/20.1 hp) on a cont/30min basis, with a top speed of about 2,500 rpm. HNK publishes no torque figure. The VTC-12/16F one size up has A.C 15/18.5 kW (20.1/24.8 hp).

03 How does the C-axis on the VTC-10/12F work?

The table doubles as the C-axis. HNK lists a table speed for indexing of 0 to 3 rpm and C-axis indexing of 0.001 degree, separate from the turning speed range that tops out at about 450 rpm.

04 What taper does the VTC-10/12F milling spindle have?

ISO 50, as on every VTC size. Turning tools are held on a 40 x 40 mm (1.6 x 1.6 in) shank in the 240 x 240 mm (9.4 x 9.4 in) ram. The page does not describe how tools are changed, so ask what tool magazine is included.
