Overview
The Hermle C 42 U MT GEN2 adds turning to a 5-axis machining centre by spinning its swivelling rotary table: the C-axis is continuous through 360 degrees and runs at up to 800 rpm for turning. The table measures Ø 800 x 630 mm (Ø 31.5 × 24.8 in) and carries 1,400 kg (3,086 lb). Travels are 800 mm (31.5 in) in X and Y and 550 mm (21.7 in) in Z.
The maximum workpiece is Ø 800 × H 560 mm (Ø 31.5 × H 22 in) inside a collision circle of Ø 990 mm (39 in), with a table clearance of max. 700 mm (27.6 in). The workpiece diameter is the same as the table diameter and the X and Y travel, so a full-size part uses everything the machine has. For turning, the 800 rpm ceiling matters most at the other end of the range. Surface speed falls with diameter, and small turned features on a large part will run below the speed carbide prefers.
Five spindle speeds are offered as options: 15,000, 16,000, 20,000, 25,000 or 42,000 rpm. This model's own table gives no power, torque or taper. The C 42 rows fill that in with 31 kW and 194 Nm at 15,000 rpm, 42 kW and 148 Nm at 20,000 rpm and 35 kW with 17.5 Nm at 42,000 rpm, on HSK A 63 / HSK T 63 (MT variants) or HSK E 40.
Rapid traverse is given as X 45 (60), Y 45 (60), Z 40 (60) m/min. The bracketed 60 m/min reads as a faster version of the drives, so confirm which figure a quotation includes. The tool magazine has 42 positions and is expandable to 252, and the control is a Heidenhain TNC7 or a Siemens SINUMERIK ONE.

The row reads X 45 (60), Y 45 (60), Z 40 (60) m/min. The first figure in each pair is the base rapid traverse and the bracketed 60 m/min is a second, faster figure. The table does not name the version it belongs to, so have the supplier state the rapid traverse of the machine as quoted.

Not in size. The C 42 U GEN2 lists the same 800 mm (31.5 in) of X and Y travel, 550 mm (21.7 in) of Z, the same Ø 800 × 630 mm (Ø 31.5 × 24.8 in) table, 1,400 kg (3,086 lb) load and the same spindle speed options. What the C 42 U MT GEN2 table adds is turning: a C-axis listed at up to 800 rpm.

When the part outgrows 800 mm (31.5 in) or 1,400 kg (3,086 lb). The C 52 U MT has 1,000 mm (39.4 in), 1,100 mm (43.3 in) and 750 mm (29.5 in) of travel and takes 2,000 kg (4,409 lb). The C 52 U MT spindle options are 9,000 / 14,000 / 18,000 rpm, so it gives up the 25,000 and 42,000 rpm choices available here.
