Overview

The Hermle C 42 U MT GEN2 is the mill-turn variant of the updated C 42 U GEN2, combining full simultaneous 5-axis milling with integrated turning capability on the C-axis table. The GEN2 upgrade brings faster rapids, doubled table capacity, and the latest control platforms to Hermle's most popular mill-turn model.

X/Y/Z travels are 800 x 800 x 550 mm (31.5 x 31.5 x 21.7 in) with an 800 mm (31.5 in) diameter trunnion table rated for 1,400 kg (3,086 lb). The C-axis table uses a direct-drive torque motor capable of turning at up to 800 rpm, delivering smooth surface finishes that rival dedicated turning centers on many operations. The A-axis provides +/- 120 degrees of swivel for maximum workpiece access.

The standard milling spindle runs at 18,000 rpm HSK-A63 with 29 kW (39 hp) continuous power, with options spanning 15,000 to 42,000 rpm. Rapid traverse is upgraded to 45 m/min (1,772 ipm) on X/Y with optional 60 m/min, and 40 m/min on Z with optional 60 m/min. The tool magazine holds 42 positions, expandable to 252.

The mineral-cast base weighs approximately 14,000 kg, providing the mass needed to handle combined milling and turning forces. Control options include Heidenhain TNC7 or Siemens SINUMERIK ONE with full mill-turn cycle support. Positioning accuracy is +/- 0.005 mm with repeatability of +/- 0.003 mm.

The C 42 U MT GEN2 is the sweet spot in Hermle's mill-turn lineup — it handles most medium-sized parts that need both 5-axis milling and turning. New pricing runs $750,000-$1,150,000.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Done-in-one 5-axis mill-turn eliminates part transfers between milling and turning machines
  • 1,400 kg table capacity handles substantial medium-sized workpieces in steel and titanium
  • 800 rpm C-axis turning via direct-drive torque motor for excellent surface finish
  • 252-tool magazine option supports complex multi-operation programs without setup changes
  • Faster 45/60 m/min rapids reduce non-cutting time vs the original C 42 U MT
  • Choice of TNC7 or SINUMERIK ONE with full mill-turn programming support

Limitations

  • Starting price near $750,000 is a significant capital commitment for mill-turn capability
  • 800 rpm turning is adequate but not competitive with dedicated turning centers for heavy turning
  • 14,000 kg machine weight requires proper foundation engineering
  • Mill-turn programming requires operators skilled in both milling and turning cycles

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What changed from the original C 42 U MT to the GEN2?

The GEN2 doubles table load to 1,400 kg, increases rapids to 45/60 m/min, adds TNC7 and SINUMERIK ONE controls, and offers new spindle speed options. The mill-turn capability with 800 rpm turning remains the same.

02 What does a Hermle C 42 U MT GEN2 cost?

New machines run $750,000-$1,150,000 depending on control, spindle, tool magazine, and automation options. The MT adds approximately $150,000-$250,000 over the standard C 42 U GEN2.

03 What turning operations can it perform?

OD/ID turning, facing, boring, grooving, and threading. The 800 rpm maximum speed and direct-drive motor handle most turning operations on medium-sized parts.

04 How does it compare to the C 52 U MT?

The C 52 U MT offers 200 mm more X, 300 mm more Y, 200 mm more Z, and 600 kg more table capacity. Choose the C 42 U MT GEN2 if your parts fit within 800 mm and you want the latest GEN2 control and drive technology.
