Overview
The Haas EC-630 is a 50-taper twin-pallet horizontal machining center with 1016 x 940 x 1016 mm (40 x 37 x 40 in) of travel — one of the largest work envelopes in the Haas HMC lineup. The 630 mm (24.8 in) square pallets handle up to 680 kg (1,500 lb) each, which is a major step up from the EC-500 series at 400 kg. For shops machining large, heavy components that need pallet-changing productivity, this is where Haas gets serious.
The 2-speed gearbox spindle delivers 460 Nm (340 ft-lbf) of torque at 700 RPM with a max speed of 7,500 RPM and 22.4 kW (30 hp) of power. The CT or BT 50 taper provides the tool clamping force needed for large face mills and boring bars. The integrated B-axis rotary maintains the same 575 Nm (424 ft-lbf) continuous torque and cycloidal drive as the EC-500 series, but now handles 680 kg of part weight.
The standard 50+1 SMTC is a serious tool magazine, handling tools up to 13.6 kg (30 lb) and 178 mm (7 in) diameter with adjacent empty, and 508 mm (20 in) max tool length from the gage line. Tool-to-tool is 4.2 seconds and chip-to-chip averages 6.3 seconds. Max part diameter is 1,000 mm (39.4 in) and max height is 1,000 mm, giving a generous work cube.
Rapids are 18.0 m/min (710 ipm) on all axes, and axis thrust forces are notably higher than the EC-500 series: 18,033 N on X and Z, and 31,071 N on Y. That's nearly 2.5x the Y-axis thrust of the EC-500, reflecting the larger machine's ability to push harder through material.
At 12,701 kg (30,900 lb) and a base price around $448,000, the EC-630 is Haas's answer for shops that need production HMC capability at a fraction of the price charged by Mazak, Okuma, and Makino for similar-class machines. Specs sourced from Haas Automation published data.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 1016 x 940 x 1016 mm travel with 1,000 mm max part diameter handles large components most HMCs can't
- 680 kg (1,500 lb) pallet load is 70% higher than the EC-500 series, supporting heavy tombstone setups
- 31,071 N Y-axis thrust force is 2.5x the EC-500, reflecting the machine's ability to push through heavy cuts
- 50+1 SMTC standard with 508 mm max tool length and 13.6 kg capacity handles large 50-taper tools
- Base price around $448K significantly undercuts comparable 630mm HMCs from Mazak, Okuma, and Makino
- 12,701 kg (30,900 lb) machine weight provides excellent stability for aggressive machining
Limitations
- 7,500 RPM max spindle limits high-speed aluminum work — this machine is built for ferrous materials
- 6.3 sec chip-to-chip is slow compared to 40-taper HMCs and premium 50-taper competitors
- 30,900 lb weight and large footprint require serious floor reinforcement and rigging
- 15-second pallet change time is slower than sub-10-second changes on Mazak and Okuma HMCs
- 22.4 kW (30 hp) spindle power is modest for a machine this size — competitors offer 40-50 hp at this level

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Base price starts around $448,000. With through-spindle coolant, probing, and optional upgrades, expect $490,000-$530,000. That's roughly $100K-$200K less than comparable 630mm HMCs from Mazak or Okuma.
02
The EC-630 has larger 630mm pallets (vs 500mm), 70% more pallet load capacity (680 kg vs 400 kg), more travel in all axes, and higher thrust forces. It costs about $100K more. Choose the EC-630 when your parts or fixtures exceed the EC-500/50's capacity.
03
Max part diameter is 1,000 mm (39.4 in) and max height is 1,000 mm, measured from the pallet surface. With the full 1016 x 940 x 1016 mm travel envelope and 680 kg pallet capacity, the EC-630 handles most mid-to-large horizontal machining applications.
04
For most applications, yes. The 460 Nm of torque at the spindle is more than adequate for heavy steel roughing. The gearbox design trades high-speed capability for low-end torque. For shops needing more power, consider larger HMCs from Haas or competitors with 40+ hp spindles.
05
At 12,701 kg (30,900 lb) before adding workpieces and fixtures, you need reinforced concrete flooring rated for at least 18,000 kg point loading. Shipping dimensions are approximately 610 x 364 x 345 cm. Consult a structural engineer before installation.
