Overview

The Haas EC-500/50 puts a 50-taper, gear-driven spindle on the travels and pallets of the EC-500: 340 ft-lbf (460 N·m) at 700 rpm from 30 hp (22.4 kW), with 32 × 25 × 28 in (813 × 635 × 711 mm) of travel and two 19.69 in (500 mm) pallets. It is a machine for heavy cutters on parts that are not themselves heavy.

The EC-500 has a 40-taper inline spindle with 90 ft-lbf (122 N·m) at 2,000 rpm, so the 50-taper machine has about 3.8 times the torque, delivered through a 2-speed gearbox at roughly a third of the speed. The trade is pace. Rapids fall from 1,400 ipm (35.6 m/min) on the EC-500 to 710 ipm (18 m/min), cutting feed from 833 ipm (21.2 m/min) on the EC-500 to 500 ipm (12.7 m/min), and top speed from the EC-500's 8,100 rpm to 7,500 rpm.

The tool changer is sized to match the spindle. It holds 50+1 tools up to 4 in (102 mm) in diameter, 16 in (406 mm) long and 30 lb (13.6 kg), or 8 in (203 mm) in diameter with the adjacent pockets empty. A tool change takes 4.2 s tool-to-tool and 6.3 s chip-to-chip. Axis thrust is 4,054 lbf (18,033 N) on X and Z and 2,854 lbf (12,695 N) on Y.

The pallet does not grow with the spindle. Maximum pallet load is 880 lb (400 kg), and the B axis is listed with 424 ft-lbf (575 N·m) of rotational torque and a 2,500 ft-lbf (3,390 N·m) brake. A steel part plus tombstone will reach the 880 lb limit long before it fills the 29.5 in (749 mm) part diameter and 36.5 in (927 mm) height envelope. If the parts are heavy as well as hard, the EC-630 carries 1,500 lb (680 kg) per pallet with the same spindle figures.

Haas's feature list names a cycloidal rotary drive, hydraulic pallet clamping, a stepped base and column and an automatic probe riser. Shipping weight is 26,000 lb (11,820 kg), against 20,120 lb (9,126 kg) for the EC-500. Haas lists a starting price of US$349,995.
