Overview

The Haas EC-500/50 adds a 50-taper spindle to the popular EC-500 platform, creating a 500mm-class HMC with serious torque in a relatively compact footprint. It shares the same 813 x 635 x 711 mm (32 x 25 x 28 in) travel envelope, twin-pallet system, and cycloidal B-axis drive as the 40-taper EC-500, but the spindle changes the machine's character significantly.

The 2-speed gearbox spindle delivers 460 Nm (340 ft-lbf) of torque at 700 RPM with 22.4 kW (30 hp) of power and a max speed of 7,500 RPM. That's nearly four times the torque of the 40-taper version, making the EC-500/50 a much better choice for heavy steel and cast iron work. The CT or BT 50 taper provides the tool clamping force needed for large face mills, boring bars, and heavy roughing operations.

The standard 50+1 SMTC handles tools up to 13.6 kg (30 lb) and 203 mm (8 in) diameter with adjacent empty pockets, a substantial upgrade from the 40-taper's 30+1 changer with 5.4 kg max tool weight. Tool-to-tool time is 4.2 seconds and chip-to-chip averages 6.3 seconds, both slower than the 40-taper version due to the heavier 50-taper tools.

Rapids are 18.0 m/min (710 ipm) on all axes, slower than the 40-taper's 35.6 m/min. This is partly due to the heavier spindle assembly and partly reflects the machine's design priorities — torque and rigidity over speed. At 11,820 kg (26,000 lb), the EC-500/50 weighs about 2,700 kg more than the 40-taper EC-500.

The twin 500 mm pallets each handle 400 kg (880 lb) with 15-second pallet changes. The B-axis rotary maintains the same 575 Nm continuous torque and 3-second 90-degree rotation as the EC-500. Base price starts around $350,000. For shops that need 50-taper cutting capability with pallet-changing productivity, the EC-500/50 offers that combination at a lower price point than most competitors. Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 460 Nm (340 ft-lbf) of torque at 700 RPM makes it a serious steel and cast iron machining platform
  • 50+1 SMTC standard with 13.6 kg max tool weight handles heavy 50-taper toolholders and large cutters
  • Twin-pallet system with 15-sec changes maintains spindle uptime during load/unload operations
  • 11,820 kg (26,000 lb) machine weight provides excellent vibration damping for heavy cuts
  • Same cycloidal B-axis drive and pallet system as EC-500, proven and reliable in production
  • 50-taper HMC capability at ~$350K undercuts most competitors by $100K or more

Limitations

  • 18.0 m/min (710 ipm) rapids are half the speed of the 40-taper EC-500's 1,400 ipm
  • 6.3 sec chip-to-chip is 75% slower than the EC-500's 3.6 sec due to heavier 50-taper tools
  • 7,500 RPM max spindle speed limits high-speed machining of aluminum
  • 400 kg (880 lb) max pallet load is the same as the 40-taper version — no increase for heavier work
  • 26,000 lb weight requires more robust floor support and heavier rigging for installation
05

Best For

Production shops machining steel and cast iron parts requiring 50-taper torque and pallet changing Automotive and heavy equipment shops running medium-to-high volume ferrous parts Shops that need 50-taper HMC capability without the price tag of Japanese or European machines Tombstone fixturing operations with heavy roughing on steel components Shops upgrading from 40-taper HMCs that need more cutting authority in hard materials Lights-out production cells running steel or cast iron parts with unattended pallet changes

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does a new Haas EC-500/50 cost?

Base price starts around $350,000. With through-spindle coolant, probing, and other common options, expect $390,000-$420,000. That's about $39,000 more than the 40-taper EC-500.

02 What's the difference between the EC-500 and EC-500/50?

The EC-500/50 swaps the 40-taper 8,100 RPM direct-drive spindle for a 50-taper 7,500 RPM gearbox spindle with 460 Nm of torque (vs 122 Nm). It comes with a 50+1 SMTC (vs 30+1) but has slower rapids at 710 ipm (vs 1,400 ipm). Choose based on whether you need speed (40T) or torque (50T).

03 How does the EC-500/50 compare to the EC-630?

The EC-630 has larger 630mm pallets with 680 kg load capacity, more travel (1016 x 940 x 1016 mm), and handles significantly bigger parts. It costs about $100K more. Choose the EC-500/50 for parts that fit on 500mm pallets, the EC-630 when you need the larger work envelope.

04 Can I upgrade from a 40-taper EC-500 to 50-taper?

No. The EC-500 and EC-500/50 are different machines with different spindle cartridges, tool changers, and casting designs. You cannot convert between them. This is a factory configuration decision.

05 Is the optional 10,000 RPM spindle worth it?

If you run a mix of steel and aluminum, the optional 10,000 RPM, 60 hp spindle significantly expands the machine's range. It costs extra but it's the only way to get both 50-taper rigidity and reasonable aluminum machining speeds on this platform.
