Overview

At 73 x 149 x 6.5 in, the Arclight Dynamics Arc Max X 6x12 HD has the larger of the two Arc Max X cutting envelopes. It is a high-definition plasma system and not a bare table: Arclight supplies it with a Hypertherm XPR 170 or XPR 300 plasma source, a Core Plus gas console and three days of onsite installation and training.

The extra bed is the reason to choose it over the Arc Max X 5x10 HD, which cuts 62 x 124 in. Weight capacity is 8,978 lb, the water pan holds 420 gallons and the table weighs 3,500 lb. The base is 82 x 157 in and the overall dimensions are 100.5 in L x 167 in W x 60 in H, so the bay, the door and the crane coverage all have to be checked against those numbers. Plate six feet wide and twelve long is crane work at any thickness worth cutting on this machine.

Thickness depends on the source. Arclight states a production pierce capacity in mild steel of 1-9/16 in (40 mm) for the XPR 170 and 2 in (50 mm) for the XPR 300; from an edge start the figures are 2-3/8 in (60 mm) and 3-1/8 in (80 mm). The standard Core Plus console handles oxygen, nitrogen, air and argon. Core, VWI and OptiMix consoles are the other choices, and an added Hypertherm 45 SYNC covers thin gauge cutting and part marking.

Nothing in the motion system changes with size. Closed-loop servo motors move both axes through helical rack and pinion along Hiwin 20 mm linear rails, the gantry is machined aircraft-grade aluminum, and the welded frame is stress-relieved and machined after welding. The water table is 8 in deep. FlashCut CNC controls motion over EtherCAT and manages gas flow, arc voltage and pierce timing with the plasma source. Positioning accuracy is listed as 0.001 in, and table power is 110 V at 15 to 20 A.

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How does the Arc Max X 6x12 HD differ from the Arc Max X 5x10 HD?

Only in size. This table cuts 73 x 149 x 6.5 in where the Arc Max X 5x10 HD cuts 62 x 124 x 6.5 in, and it has a weight capacity of 8,978 lb and a 420 gallon water pan. Arclight states that both sizes include the same plasma system, controller, servo motors, helical drives and linear rails.

02 What floor space does the Arc Max X 6x12 HD need?

The base is 82 x 157 in and the overall dimensions are 100.5 in L x 167 in W x 60 in H. Listed weight is 3,500 lb, and the water pan adds 420 gallons when filled. Leave room on the loading side for plate handling as well.

03 How thick can the Arc Max X 6x12 HD pierce?

That depends on the plasma source chosen. For mild steel Arclight gives a production pierce capacity of 1-9/16 in (40 mm) with the Hypertherm XPR 170 and 2 in (50 mm) with the XPR 300. Edge starts extend to 2-3/8 in (60 mm) and 3-1/8 in (80 mm) respectively.

04 What control does the Arc Max X 6x12 HD use?

FlashCut CNC with EtherCAT motion control. It communicates directly with the plasma source to manage gas flow, arc voltage and pierce timing, and the system uses Stingray torch height control. Closed-loop servo motors on X and Y carry out the motion.
