Overview
The WFL M35 MILLTURN is a complete machining center for complex, precise rotational components, combining high-performance turning with full 5-axis milling capability in a single setup. Manufactured by WFL Millturn Technologies in Linz, Austria, the M35 targets medium-sized workpieces with swing diameters up to approximately 520 mm and represents the entry point into WFL's world-renowned MILLTURN product family.
WFL pioneered the combined turn-mill machining concept, and the M35 embodies decades of refinement. The machine's B-axis milling spindle swivels continuously for complex angular machining, while the main turning spindle delivers the torque and surface speed required for heavy roughing and fine finishing of aerospace alloys, steel shafts, and large hydraulic components. A tailstock or steady rest supports long shaft workpieces, and an optional counter spindle allows complete machining in one clamping.
The M35 is built on a thermally optimized cast iron bed with Heidenhain linear scales on all axes for direct position measurement, ensuring that thermal drift does not accumulate into positional error during long production cycles. The integrated tool storage — standard at 40 tools, expandable to 80 or more — keeps the machine capable of complex programs without manual tool changes.
WFL's own MILLTURN.CONNECT software ecosystem integrates with the FANUC or Siemens control for in-process measurement, adaptive feed control, and digital twin simulation. For aerospace, power generation, oil and gas, and precision engineering manufacturers, the M35 provides a single-machine answer to component families that previously required three or four separate operations across multiple machine types.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Complete turn-mill capability in one setup eliminates multi-machine routings for complex shafts
- Direct position measurement via Heidenhain linear scales eliminates thermal drift from positional error
- B-axis ±120° swivel range enables virtually any angular milling or drilling feature
- WFL's MILLTURN.CONNECT digital ecosystem supports in-process measurement and adaptive control
- Expandable tool magazine up to 120 tools supports complex long-running programs
Limitations
- Very high capital cost — requires significant volume or part complexity to justify investment
- Large machine weight and footprint require substantial foundation and floor load capacity
- Programming 5-axis mill-turn cycles demands advanced CAM expertise and thorough simulation

Frequently Asked Questions
01
MILLTURN is WFL's trademarked product name for its complete machining centers that combine turning, milling, drilling, boring, thread whirling, and gear hobbing in a single machine. WFL coined the MILLTURN concept and has refined it over decades — the M35 MILLTURN is the mid-range model in the current lineup, positioned for medium-diameter precision components.
02
The standard M35 MILLTURN accommodates turning lengths up to 1,500 mm between centers. Extended bed configurations are available for longer shafts, making the machine suitable for turbine shafts, lead screws, and other elongated components that require complete multi-operation machining.
03
The M35 uses Heidenhain linear scales for direct position measurement on all linear axes. Unlike indirect measurement through ballscrew encoders, direct scales continuously measure actual slide position and compensate for any thermal growth or mechanical compliance in the drive train. This maintains micron-level accuracy even after hours of heavy cutting.
04
Yes. WFL MILLTURN machines support gear hobbing and skiving operations as optional software cycles, using the B-axis milling spindle with a hobbing cutter. This allows external gears, splines, and serrations to be cut directly on turned shafts without a separate gear cutting machine, further consolidating operations.
05
MILLTURN.CONNECT is WFL's integrated software ecosystem that connects the machine's CNC control with in-process measurement cycles, digital twin simulation, adaptive feed control, and production monitoring. It allows operators to validate programs virtually before cutting, measure features in-cycle and adjust offsets automatically, and monitor machine health and utilization in real time.
