Overview
The Sodick AP650L is the largest model in the AP series oil-dielectric wire EDM lineup, offering 650 x 450 x 120 mm X/Y/Z travel for precision machining of large motor core dies, electronic component tooling, and stamping dies where oil-based dielectric provides superior surface integrity. With a 200 kg maximum workpiece weight and workpiece dimensions up to 820 x 590 x 100 mm, the AP650L handles die plates that exceed mid-size AP models.
The AP650L 650 mm X-axis travel is designed for the largest EV motor stator lamination dies, industrial generator core tooling, and wide-format electronic component die sets. The machine supports wire diameters from 0.05 to 0.30 mm, the widest range in the AP series, and employs 4-axis linear motors for frictionless positioning. High-speed eco-cut capability delivers up to 50% faster machining.
Oil dielectric eliminates corrosion and electrolysis effects that water dielectric causes on sensitive die materials. For large motor core dies where dozens of precision punches must maintain consistent clearances across the full die plate, the surface integrity advantage translates directly into longer die life.
At 6,300 kg machine weight (including service tank) and 2,470 x 1,990 mm footprint (4,000 x 3,630 mm installation space), the AP650L requires three-phase 13 kVA power.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 650 x 450 mm travel handles the largest EV motor stator dies and wide-format electronic die sets
- 200 kg workpiece capacity doubles the AP350L/AP450L limit
- Wire range 0.05-0.30 mm is widest in the AP series for both micro-features and heavy roughing
- Oil dielectric eliminates corrosion and electrolysis on sensitive die materials
- 4-axis linear motors provide frictionless positioning across the full 650 mm travel
- High-speed eco-cut delivers up to 50% faster machining on large die plates
Limitations
- 120 mm Z-axis limits to thin-section precision work
- Plus/minus 7 degree taper range is conservative
- Oil dielectric requires fire suppression and ventilation
- 6,300 kg and 4,000 x 3,630 mm installation space requires more shop floor commitment
Best For
Frequently Asked Questions
01
650 x 450 mm travel versus 450 x 300 mm. Workpiece weight doubles to 200 kg. Wire range expands to 0.05-0.30 mm from 0.05-0.25 mm. Both share oil dielectric and linear motors.
02
The 0.30 mm maximum enables faster roughing on larger die plates. The AP650L balances micro-features (0.05 mm) with production roughing speed (0.30 mm).
03
It can cut progressive die components up to 820 x 590 mm in oil dielectric, valuable for motor core progressive dies. For general-purpose progressive dies, water-dielectric AQ/AG series machines are more appropriate.
04
Up to 50% faster machining on appropriate material/thickness combinations by optimizing discharge parameters and wire consumption.
