Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Salvagnini S4-40 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
With a maximum sheet of 4,064 x 1,650 mm (160.0 x 65.0 in) and a diagonal of 4,655 mm (183.3 in), the Salvagnini S4-40 is the long version of the S4 punching-shearing center. The S4-30 takes 3,048 x 1,650 mm. Speeds, accelerations and thickness limits are the same on both.
What a four-metre S4 is for is flow. The machine takes a sheet, punches and forms it, shears the parts free and sends them on, with no semi-finished stack between operations. Salvagnini describes it as easy to configure for stand-alone work, in-line use, a flexible cell or lights-out manufacturing. Feeding can come from the PD automatic pack destacker, the MD store for single sheets or the MV store for packs; the IA table stacker and the MCU Cartesian manipulator handle what comes out.
Tooling stays loaded. The multi-press head houses up to 117 thick turret tools across stations B, C and D, each actuated individually, and all of them carry a 9 mm sharpening margin. Lower cylinders can be mounted, and station D accepts Multitool forming tools. If threads are needed, an optional electrical tapping unit for up to 6 different tools mounts beside the head, outside it, so it takes no tool positions.
Check the thickness table against the material mix before ordering. Aluminum is listed at 5.0 mm (0.20 in) for both punching and shearing. Steel punches to 4.0 mm (0.16 in) but shears to 3.5 mm (0.14 in), and stainless steel punches to 4.0 mm but shears to 2.0 mm (0.08 in). The punching figures are given without multitool. The manipulator will not take a sheet smaller than 600 x 400 mm (23.6 x 15.7 in).

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Maximum sheet of 4,064 x 1,650 mm (160.0 x 65.0 in) with a 4,655 mm (183.3 in) diagonal
- Up to 117 thick turret tools stay loaded, each with a 9 mm sharpening margin
- Tapping unit mounts outside the head and takes no tool positions
- X axis at 132 m/min and Y axis at 117 m/min, with 30 m/s2 and 17 m/s2 acceleration
- Centering control measures the incoming sheet and adapts the program to the actual dimensions
Limitations
- Steel shears to 3.5 mm (0.14 in) although it punches to 4.0 mm (0.16 in)
- Stainless steel shearing stops at 2.0 mm (0.08 in)
- Sheet width is fixed at 1,650 mm maximum
- Minimum sheet of 600 x 400 mm (23.6 x 15.7 in) excludes small blanks
- Parts are separated by straight shear cuts in X and Y, so curved outlines need another process

Frequently Asked Questions
01
The S4-40 takes a longer sheet: 4,064 x 1,650 mm (160.0 x 65.0 in) with a 4,655 mm (183.3 in) diagonal. The S4-30 takes 3,048 x 1,650 mm. Axis speeds, accelerations, technologies and material thickness limits are identical in the table.
02
The multi-press head has a die structure housing up to 117 thick turret tools in stations B, C and D. Every tool is actuated individually and is always available. Station D has a maximum force of 30 tons and can mount Multitool forming tools.
03
Yes, with an option. An electrical tapping unit that can house up to 6 different tools can be installed to the side of the operating head. Because it sits outside the head it does not take room from the punching tools.
04
Punching is listed to 4.0 mm (0.16 in) in stainless steel with UTS 610 N/mm2, without multitool. Shearing is listed to 2.0 mm (0.08 in). A part that must be sheared free is therefore limited to 2.0 mm, whatever the punching capacity.
05
PD is an automatic pack destacker, MD a store for single sheet handling and MV a store for pack handling. On the output side, IA is an automatic table stacker and MCU a Cartesian manipulator for automatic sorting or loading semi-finished parts.
