Overview

The Mazak Power Master is Yamazaki Mazak's top-of-the-line heavy-duty CNC turning center, built for the most demanding large-part turning applications in oil and gas, power generation, and heavy industry. Available in Chucker and Universal configurations with a 15-inch chuck and 45 kW (60 hp) spindle, the Power Master delivers maximum torque and rigidity for work that pushes the limits of standard production lathes.

The Power Master Chucker focuses on large-diameter short work with a max turning diameter of 1,000 mm (39.37 in) and 1,012 mm (39.84 in) of turning length. The Universal model is designed for between-centers shaft work, offering 840 mm (33.07 in) max turning diameter and turning lengths up to 4,004 mm (157.67 in) on the long bed. Both share the same 45 kW spindle delivering 7,280 Nm (5,369 ft-lbs) of maximum torque.

Spindle bore options range from 118 mm (4.65 in) standard to 375 mm (14.76 in) on the largest configuration. The Chucker uses an 8-station octagonal boring turret, while the Universal adds a 6-tool hexagonal boring turret alongside its 8-station disc turret for expanded tool capacity.

The MAZATROL SmoothC control handles programming and operation, a specialized variant optimized for large turning center applications.

The Power Master competes with Hankook, Toshiba Machine, and Hwacheon heavy-duty lathes. It sits at the top of Mazak's turning lineup and represents a significant capital investment. For shops that regularly turn parts over 30 inches in diameter or need 13 feet of between-centers capacity, the Power Master is one of the most capable platforms available. Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 1,000 mm max turning diameter handles the largest chucking work in Mazak's lineup
  • 7,280 Nm spindle torque enables aggressive roughing on large forgings and castings
  • Spindle bore options up to 375 mm for the largest through-bore work
  • Universal model with 4,004 mm turning length handles turbine shafts and rolls
  • Dual turret on Universal provides expanded tool capacity
  • 45 kW spindle maintains power across the full RPM range
  • MAZATROL SmoothC optimized for large turning applications

Limitations

  • Starting at $350K and reaching $700K, demands serious capital justification
  • Machine weight of 16,000-28,000 kg requires reinforced foundations and heavy rigging
  • 1,200 RPM max spindle speed limits small-diameter work
  • 12 m/min rapid traverse is slow on long-travel moves
  • Extremely limited used market; most stay in service for decades

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does a Power Master cost?

New pricing ranges from $350,000 for standard Chucker to over $700,000 for long-bed Universal with maximum options.

02 Chucker vs Universal?

Chucker: large-diameter short parts, 39.37-inch max diameter, single turret. Universal: long between-centers work, 33-inch max diameter, up to 157-inch length, dual turret.

03 What foundation is needed?

At 16,000-28,000 kg, requires purpose-designed reinforced concrete foundation with structural engineering review.

04 Power Master vs Slant Turn?

Power Master offers larger max turning diameter (39 vs 36 inches) and more torque (7,280 vs 7,000 Nm). Slant Turn provides wider range of chuck and bore options.

05 Through-bore capability?

Yes. Spindle bore options up to 375 mm for heavy-wall pipe facing and boring operations.
