Overview

The Mazak QT-Ez 8 is the base 2-axis 8-inch chuck model in Mazak's value-oriented QT-Ez turning center family. It delivers Mazak build quality and a built-in motor spindle at a price that directly challenges the Haas ST-20 and Doosan Lynx 2600. This is a turning-only machine — no milling, no Y-axis — designed for shops that need a reliable workhorse lathe at an accessible price.

The main spindle delivers 15 kW (20 hp) at up to 4,500 RPM through an A2-6 spindle nose with 52 mm (2.05 in) bar capacity. The built-in motor spindle eliminates belt vibration and reduces maintenance versus belt-driven competitors. The 12-station turret accepts standard bolt-on tooling for turning, boring, grooving, and threading. Max turning diameter is 410 mm (16.13 in) over a 580 mm (22.83 in) swing, with 596 mm (23.47 in) of turning length.

Axis travels are 200 mm (X) and 540 mm (Z) with rapids of 30 m/min on both axes. At approximately 3,500 kg (7,716 lb), the QT-Ez 8 is moderate in weight and keeps the floor space requirements compact. The generous 16-inch max turning diameter accommodates larger chuck work than many competing 8-inch lathes.

Running MAZATROL SmoothEz on a 15-inch touchscreen, the control handles conversational programming and G-code. The QT-Ez 8 is positioned for shops that want Mazak quality and MAZATROL programming in a basic 2-axis lathe without paying for milling capability they don't need. New pricing starts around $65,000-$90,000. Specs sourced from Mazak Corporation published data.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Built-in motor spindle eliminates belt vibration and reduces maintenance costs versus belt-driven competitors
  • 410 mm max turning diameter accommodates larger chuck work than most competing 8-inch lathes
  • MAZATROL SmoothEz conversational control cuts programming time on turned parts
  • 596 mm turning length handles shaft-type parts up to 23.5 inches without a long-bed option
  • Mazak build quality and nameplate at a price that directly competes with Haas and Doosan
  • Compact footprint and moderate weight simplify installation

Limitations

  • 52 mm bar capacity is smaller than the 65 mm offered on some competing 8-inch lathes
  • No milling, Y-axis, or sub-spindle — purely a 2-axis turning machine
  • 15 kW spindle is adequate but not as powerful as the 18.5 kW found on the QTE-200 series
  • SmoothEz control lacks some advanced features found on SmoothG

Best For

Production shops needing reliable 2-axis turning without milling requirements at a competitive price Shops adding dedicated lathe capacity for high-volume parts like bushings, spacers, and flanges First-time Mazak buyers wanting to evaluate the platform and MAZATROL programming Contract manufacturers needing affordable workhorse lathes for parts that get secondary ops on a VMC Shops replacing older manual or CNC lathes with a modern Mazak at an entry-level price

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does a new Mazak QT-Ez 8 cost?

Base QT-Ez 8 starts around $65,000-$75,000. Adding chip conveyor, tailstock, high-pressure coolant, and bar feeder interface pushes the price toward $90,000. This is one of the most affordable Mazak turning centers available.

02 QT-Ez 8 vs QTE-200 SG?

Both are economy 8-inch lathes but from different lineups. The QT-Ez 8 has a larger 410 mm max turning diameter but smaller 52 mm bar capacity. The QTE-200 SG has a larger 65 mm bar capacity and 18.5 kW spindle. Choose based on whether bar capacity or max turning diameter matters more.

03 QT-Ez 8 vs Haas ST-20?

The Haas ST-20 typically costs $5,000-$10,000 less and has a bigger bar capacity at 57 mm. The Mazak offers a built-in motor spindle for smoother cuts and MAZATROL conversational programming. Both are solid value 8-inch lathes.

04 Can I add milling capability later?

No. The QT-Ez 8 base model does not support milling retrofit. If you think you might need milling, buy the QT-Ez 8M from the start. The turret and spindle architecture are different between the base and M variants.
