How much does the Hanwha XD20III cost?
Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Hanwha XD20III that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Hanwha XD20III is a Swiss-type lathe for Ø20 mm (0.8 in) stock, and what separates it from the XD20 II is the back end: a Y2 back tool unit with 8 ER16 tools, 4 fixed and 4 driven, where the XD20 II has 4 back tools of which 2 are driven. The back tools turn at up to 8,000 rpm, the same speed as the sub spindle they serve. Hanwha also lists an optional arrangement of back 6, cross 2, turning 2.
The main spindle reaches 10,000 rpm. Its motor depends on the control: 2.2/3.7 kW (3.0/5.0 hp) with the Hanwha Fanuc i, or 16 kW (21.5 hp) with the Siemens 828D. The sub spindle is listed at 1.5/2.2 kW (2.0/3.0 hp) with Fanuc and 2.59 kW (3.5 hp) with Siemens. Driven tools, front and back, are 1.0 kW (1.3 hp) or 1.02 kW (1.4 hp) on the same split, so driven work is light drilling and milling whichever control is chosen.
On the front side there are 6 OD tools on □12 mm shanks, 5 ER16M front tools (the row reads Front 5 / Back 5), 5 ER16 cross drill tools running at 6,000 rpm and 2 ER16 off-center drill tools. Z1 stroke is 240 mm (9.4 in) with the guide bush (H) and 60 mm (2.4 in) in the non-guide-bush (N) setup.
The machine measures 2,460 x 1,290 mm (96.9 x 50.8 in) in length and width and weighs 3,000 kg (6,614 lb), against 2,700 kg (5,952 lb) for the XD20 II. Services are a 6.9 kVA, 5.5 kW supply on a VCTF 10SQ x 4C cable and 120-150 L/min of air. The 16 kW (21.5 hp) Siemens spindle figure is larger than the 5.5 kW power requirement, so ask Hanwha which rating each number refers to before sizing the supply.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Y2 back tool unit holds 8 ER16 tools, 4 fixed and 4 driven, running at up to 8,000 rpm
- Twice the back tooling of the XD20 II, which has 4 back tools with 2 driven
- 5 ER16 cross drill tools at 6,000 rpm plus 2 ER16 off-center drill tools on the front side
- Choice of Hanwha Fanuc i or Siemens 828D control
- 240 mm (9.4 in) Z1 stroke with the guide bush (H)
- Modest services: 6.9 kVA, 5.5 kW and 120-150 L/min of air
Limitations
- Driven tools are 1.0 kW (1.3 hp) with Fanuc or 1.02 kW (1.4 hp) with Siemens, which keeps milling to light cuts
- Without the guide bush (N) the Z1 stroke is 60 mm (2.4 in), so that setup is for short parts
- Heavier than the XD20 II, 3,000 kg (6,614 lb) against 2,700 kg (5,952 lb), on a 2,460 x 1,290 mm (96.9 x 50.8 in) footprint
- No rating basis is given for the 16 kW (21.5 hp) Siemens spindle figure, which exceeds the 5.5 kW power requirement
- Stock is limited to Ø20 mm (0.8 in); the XD26III takes Ø26 mm (1.0 in)

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Mainly in back-working capacity and size. The XD20III has 8 ER16 back tools (4 fixed + 4 driven) on a Y2 back tool unit and 5 cross drill tools; the XD20 II has 4 back tools (2 fixed + 2 driven) and 4 cross drill tools. The XD20III weighs 3,000 kg (6,614 lb) against 2,700 kg (5,952 lb) for the XD20 II. Both take 20 mm stock at 10,000 rpm.
02
Two controls are listed, the Hanwha Fanuc i and the Siemens 828D. With Fanuc the main spindle is 2.2/3.7 kW (3.0/5.0 hp) and the sub spindle 1.5/2.2 kW (2.0/3.0 hp). With Siemens the main spindle is 16 kW (21.5 hp) and the sub spindle 2.59 kW (3.5 hp).
