Overview

The Haas CL-1 is an ultra-compact CNC chucker lathe designed for high-volume production of small parts. No tailstock. No long bed. Just a 5C collet nose spindle, an 8-station automatic turret, and a tiny footprint that fits into spaces most CNC lathes cannot. This machine exists for one purpose: cranking out small precision parts at high speed with minimal floor space.

The 5C collet spindle delivers 3.7 kW (5 hp) at up to 6,000 RPM. Bar capacity through the spindle is 25.4 mm (1.0 in). This is not a machine for big parts. Maximum cutting diameter is 127 mm (5 in) with a cutting length of 102 mm (4 in). The 5C collet provides exceptional concentricity and repeatability on small-diameter stock, which is why this platform dominates in medical, dental, aerospace fastener, and communications component production.

The 8-station automatic turret comes standard, making the CL-1 a production machine out of the box. No need to upgrade from a toolpost. Index time is fast, and the turret holds enough stations for most small part cycles. X-axis travel is 127 mm (5 in) and Z-axis travel is 152 mm (6 in). Rapids run at 15.2 m/min (600 IPM).

The CL-1's footprint is the real story. At roughly 1,016 x 1,143 mm (40 x 45 in), it is small enough to fit into a freight elevator or be moved with a pallet jack. Weight is approximately 907 kg (2,000 lb). Shops running multiple CL-1 units can pack them into floor space that would hold a single ST-20. For high-volume small-part production, that density matters.

At roughly $45,000-$55,000 configured, the CL-1 competes with the Citizen Cincom, Star SR, and other small CNC lathes, though it lacks the sub-spindle and guide bushing of a Swiss machine. The CL-1 is a chucker, not a Swiss. For parts under 4 inches long and 1 inch in diameter that do not need guide bushing support, the CL-1 delivers fast cycle times at a fraction of the cost of a Swiss lathe. Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Ultra-compact footprint fits into freight elevators and tight shop spaces, enabling high-density production cell layouts
  • 5C collet spindle provides outstanding concentricity and repeatability for precision small-part production
  • 6,000 RPM spindle speed delivers fast surface speeds on small-diameter parts in aluminum, brass, and plastics
  • 8-station automatic turret comes standard, making this a production-ready machine out of the box
  • At $45-55K, it costs a fraction of comparable Swiss lathes while handling many of the same small-part applications
  • 907 kg (2,000 lb) weight means it can be moved with a pallet jack and requires minimal floor preparation
  • Same NGC control as every Haas machine for consistent programming and operator training

Limitations

  • 5 hp spindle limits cutting power for tough materials at aggressive feed rates
  • 25.4 mm (1.0 in) bar capacity restricts the machine to small-diameter stock only
  • No tailstock means unsupported parts over 3:1 length-to-diameter ratio will deflect under cutting forces
  • No live tooling, Y-axis, or C-axis in the base configuration limits it to turning-only operations
  • 5C collet nose is less versatile than a chuck for holding irregular or non-round workpieces

Best For

High-volume production of small precision parts under 25 mm diameter and 100 mm length Medical device and dental component manufacturers turning small implants, screws, and fittings Aerospace fastener production where concentricity and repeatability are critical Communications and electronics component manufacturers running brass, aluminum, and plastic parts Shops needing maximum production density per square foot of floor space Secondary operation work on small parts that need turning after milling or forming

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does a new Haas CL-1 cost?

Base price starts around $45,000. With a bar feeder, parts catcher, and chip conveyor, configured price runs $50,000-$55,000. The 8-station turret is included standard.

02 Is the CL-1 a Swiss lathe?

No. The CL-1 is a chucker lathe with a 5C collet spindle. It does not have a guide bushing, sub-spindle, or sliding headstock. For parts under 4 inches long that do not need guide bushing support, the CL-1 can produce similar results at a much lower cost than a Swiss machine.

03 Can I use a chuck instead of 5C collets?

The CL-1 is designed around the 5C collet nose. You can use step collets and emergency collets to hold parts up to the maximum diameter, but a conventional 3-jaw chuck is not a standard option. The 5C system is the right choice for round bar stock production.

04 How many CL-1 machines can fit in a typical shop bay?

At 40 x 45 inches, the CL-1 takes up roughly the same floor space as a large toolbox. Shops have reported fitting 4-6 CL-1 units in the space of a single ST-20, creating high-density production cells for small parts.

05 Does the CL-1 support bar feeding?

Yes. The 25.4 mm (1.0 in) bar capacity works with compact bar feeders designed for small-diameter stock. Bar feeding is the primary production method for high-volume CL-1 applications.
