Overview
The DMG Mori NLX 4000 is the heavy-duty member of the NLX universal turning lineup, built for shops that need to swing large-diameter stock with the kind of rigidity and thermal stability that the NLX platform is known for. With a maximum turning diameter of 500 mm (19.7 in), turning length up to 2,050 mm (80.7 in) in the longest bed configuration, and a 30 kW (40.2 hp) spindle delivering 1,550 Nm of torque, the NLX 4000 handles large shaft, flange, and chucking work that smaller NLX machines cannot touch.
The A2-11 spindle nose with standard 15-inch (381 mm) chuck runs at 2,500 RPM. Bar capacity is 102 mm (4.0 in), enabling production bar-fed work on oversized material. The turnMASTER spindle technology with integrated cooling maintains thermal stability throughout extended production runs. The optional sub-spindle on shorter bed variants enables backworking for complete part processing.
The BMT turret system carries the same built-in motor technology found across the NLX platform. Available in BMT 60 or VDI 50 configurations, driven tools spin at up to 10,000 RPM with up to 100 Nm of torque. The optional Y-axis adds 120 mm of travel for off-center milling and drilling. Box guideways on all axes provide the damping and rigidity that heavy-duty turning demands.
Thermal displacement control includes cooled ball screws, spindle temperature management, and bed temperature control. The NLX 4000 comes in multiple bed lengths: /700, /1250, /1500, and /2000 between centers. The machine runs CELOS with Mitsubishi MAPPS or Siemens underneath.
Pricing starts around 00,000 for a base NLX 4000/700 and can exceed 00,000 fully loaded with Y-axis, sub-spindle, and the longer bed options. Used NLX 4000 machines from 2014-2022 trade between 00,000 and 80,000. Competitors include the Mazak QT-350, Okuma LB4000 EX II, and Doosan Puma 3100.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 1,550 Nm spindle torque provides the authority for heavy roughing on large-diameter parts in tough materials without backing off feed rates
- 500 mm turning diameter and up to 2,050 mm turning length cover large shaft and flange work that smaller NLX 2500 and 3000 machines cannot handle
- 102 mm bar capacity enables production bar-fed work on oversized material, matching or exceeding most competitors in this frame size
- BMT turret at 10,000 RPM with 100 Nm provides genuine milling capability on large workpieces without sacrificing rigidity
- Box guideways on all axes deliver the vibration damping and dynamic rigidity needed for heavy-duty turning with consistent surface finish
- Thermal displacement control holds tolerances across extended production runs on large parts where thermal drift is most problematic
Limitations
- 2,500 RPM max spindle speed limits productivity on smaller-diameter parts where surface footage matters
- Starting at 00K, the NLX 4000 is a significant investment and shops doing mostly mid-size work should consider the NLX 3000 or NLX 2500
- 10,000 kg weight for the /2000 variant requires reinforced foundation and significant rigging expense
- DMG Mori service and parts costs on a large-frame machine add to total cost of ownership
- 12-station turret may limit tool capacity for complex parts with many operations

Frequently Asked Questions
01
A new NLX 4000/700 starts around 00,000. Adding BMT turret, Y-axis, sub-spindle, and longer bed options pushes the price to 60,000-00,000. Used machines from 2014-2022 sell between 00,000 and 80,000.
02
The NLX 4000 has a larger turning diameter (500 mm vs 430 mm), more powerful spindle (30 kW vs 25 kW), and higher torque (1,550 Nm vs 995 Nm). Both offer similar bed length options. Choose the NLX 4000 for parts that exceed 430 mm diameter.
03
The NLX 4000 comes in /700, /1250, /1500, and /2000 bed lengths. The designation refers to the distance between centers.
04
Yes. The BMT turret spins driven tools at 10,000 RPM with 100 Nm torque. Combined with optional Y-axis (120 mm travel) and C-axis, it handles flats, keyways, cross-holes, and pockets.
05
Both are large-bore production lathes. The NLX 4000 has BMT turret and thermal compensation advantages. The Mazak offers MAZATROL programming and generally better North American service. Pricing is comparable.
