How much does the Colchester Multiturn 4000XC cost?
Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Colchester Multiturn 4000XC that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Colchester Multiturn 4000XC is a long-bed flat-bed CNC lathe with a C-axis and a part-driven turret: 8 tool stations, of which 4 are driven, on VDI 40 / DIN 1809 tooling. Driven tools are rated 3.7 kW (5.0 hp) at up to 6,000 rpm. Swing over the bed is 554 mm (21.8 in) and the bed comes in four lengths up to 4,000 mm (157.5 in) between centres.
Think about what that allows on a long shaft. A keyway at each end, a cross-drilled grease hole, wrench flats and a tapped centre can all be produced while the shaft is still between the chuck and the tailstock. Otherwise each of those is a separate setup on a mill, with a four-metre part to sling and align every time. The saving is in handling as much as in machining.
The main spindle is the same as on the 2-axis Multiturn 4000. It delivers 11 kW (14.8 hp) over 1 - 2,000 rpm through a D1-11 camlock nose with a 104 mm (4.1 in) bore, and carries a 12 in (305 mm) chuck. A hydraulic main spindle holding brake and Cs axis control are standard, so the spindle can be indexed and locked for milling.
The four static stations still have to cover all the turning tools, so tooling needs planning; eight positions fill quickly on a turn-mill job. Programming is through ShopTurn on the Siemens 828D. Swing over the cross slide is 370 mm (14.6 in). One row, swing in the gap, is printed without a unit on this page, so it is not quoted here.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- C-axis and driven tools on beds up to 4,000 mm (157.5 in) between centres
- VDI 40 / DIN 1809 driven tooling rated 3.7 kW (5.0 hp) at up to 6,000 rpm
- 104 mm (4.1 in) spindle bore with a D1-11 camlock nose
- Hydraulic main spindle holding brake and Cs axis control as standard
- ShopTurn conversational programming for milling and drilling cycles
Limitations
- Only 4 of the 8 stations are driven
- Main spindle is 11 kW (14.8 hp); the Harrison Alpha 1550XC on the same geometry has 18.5 kW (24.8 hp)
- Maximum main spindle speed of 2,000 rpm
- No Y-axis is listed for off-centre milled features

Frequently Asked Questions
01
It has 8 tool stations, 4 of them driven. Tooling type is VDI 40 / DIN 1809. Driven tool spindle power is 3.7 kW (5.0 hp) and the maximum driven tool speed is 6,000 rpm. The standard features describe it as an auto indexing driven tool turret.
02
The Multiturn 2000XC is the smaller machine, with a 400 mm (15.7 in) swing and a 7 kW (9.4 hp) spindle. All 8 stations of the Multiturn 2000XC are driven, on VDI 20 / DIN 5480 tooling at 2.2 kW (3.0 hp). The 4000XC has fewer driven stations, a larger interface and more power at each.
03
Swing over the bed is 554 mm (21.8 in) and over the cross slide 370 mm (14.6 in). Distance between centres is 1,500 / 2,000 / 3,000 / 4,000 mm (59.1 / 78.7 / 118.1 / 157.5 in). The spindle bore is 104 mm (4.1 in) and the chuck 12 in (305 mm).
04
The Siemens 828D with a 10.4 in colour screen and the ShopTurn conversational programming system. Colchester says the XC range combines turning with milling, drilling and tapping, and that it suits one-off, small and medium size batch machining.
