Overview

The Harrison Alpha 1400XC is the smallest Alpha with milling capability: a flat-bed CNC/manual combination lathe with a C-axis and an 8-station turret in which every station is driven. Driven tools are rated 2.2 kW (3.0 hp) and reach 6,000 rpm. Tooling is listed as VDI 20 / DIN 5480.

Colchester's description of the XC is that it extends the Alpha platform with full 3-axis machining, combining turning, milling, drilling and tapping in one setup. On a lathe of this type the benefit is practical. A shaft that needs a keyway, a flange that needs a bolt circle or a prototype with a cross hole no longer has to be moved to a milling machine and clocked in again.

The main spindle is uprated to match. It delivers 9.5 kW (12.7 hp) over 1 - 2,700 rpm, where the Harrison Alpha 1400XS has 7.5 kW (10.1 hp). A hydraulic main spindle holding brake and Cs axis control are standard, so the spindle can be held against the side load of a cutter. Capacity is unchanged from the XS: 400 mm (15.7 in) swing over the bed, 1,200 / 1,850 mm (47.2 / 72.8 in) between centres and a 55 / 80 mm (2.2 / 3.1 in) bore.

Keep the milling ambitions in proportion. VDI 20 is a small interface and 2.2 kW (3.0 hp) is a drilling and light-milling figure, well matched to 6,000 rpm and small cutters. The control is the Fanuc 0i-TF Plus touchscreen with the same five operating modes as the 2-axis machines, including handwheel manual operation.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 8-station turret with all stations driven, on VDI 20 / DIN 5480 tooling
  • Driven tools reach 6,000 rpm, useful for small drills, taps and end mills
  • Main spindle uprated to 9.5 kW (12.7 hp)
  • Cs axis control and a hydraulic main spindle holding brake are standard
  • Retains manual and conversational modes alongside full CNC

Limitations

  • Driven-tool power is 2.2 kW (3.0 hp), so milling is limited to light cuts
  • VDI 20 holders restrict tool shank and boring bar size
  • Eight stations is a small turret for complex turn-mill parts
  • No Y-axis is listed, so milled features sit on the centreline or are generated with the C-axis

Best For

One-off and small-batch parts needing turning plus cross holes, flats or keyways Bolt-hole patterns on flanges within the 400 mm (15.7 in) swing Long shafts up to 1,850 mm (72.8 in) with milled features Workshops that want turn-mill capability without giving up manual operation

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What milling capability does the Harrison Alpha 1400XC have?

It has a C-axis and an auto indexing driven tool turret with 8 stations, all driven. Driven tool spindle power is 2.2 kW (3.0 hp) and maximum driven tool speed is 6,000 rpm. Tooling type is VDI 20 / DIN 5480. Colchester lists Cs axis control and a hydraulic main spindle holding brake as standard.

02 Is the main spindle different from the XS version?

Yes, in power. The XC is rated 9.5 kW (12.7 hp), against 7.5 kW (10.1 hp) for the Harrison Alpha 1400XS. Speed range, 1 - 2,700 rpm, the D1-6 camlock nose, the 10 in (254 mm) chuck and the 55 / 80 mm (2.2 / 3.1 in) bore are the same.

03 Can the Alpha 1400XC still be used as a manual lathe?

Yes. Manual Mode is one of the five operating modes Colchester describes for the Alpha XS and XC, giving conventional lathe operation with DRO-style readouts and handwheel control. The others are the Alpha System, Manual Guide i, AlphaLink offline programming and Full CNC Mode.

04 What is the next size up with driven tools?

The Harrison Alpha 1550XC, which swings 554 mm (21.8 in), has a 104 mm (4.1 in) bore and an 18.5 kW (24.8 hp) spindle, and moves to VDI 40 / DIN 1809 tooling with 3.7 kW (5.0 hp) driven tools. Only 4 of its 8 stations are driven.
