Harrison Alpha 1550XC — price

Price estimate: uncertain

We have no price for the Harrison Alpha 1550XC that we can cite and no estimate we can stand behind, so this page shows no number rather than a guess. A quote from Colchester or an authorised dealer is the reliable figure.

What moves the final price

  • Spindle, control and probing options
  • Tool changer capacity and tooling package
  • Automation — pallet changers, bar feeders, robot cells
  • Freight, rigging, installation and training
  • Region, dealer and time of year

Overview

Half of the turret on the Harrison Alpha 1550XC is driven and half is not. Colchester lists 8 tool stations with 4 driven, on VDI 40 / DIN 1809 tooling, with driven tools rated 3.7 kW (5.0 hp) at up to 6,000 rpm. It is the mid-size turn-mill member of the Alpha CNC/manual combination range, with a C-axis on a 554 mm (21.8 in) swing flat-bed lathe.

The split turret is worth thinking through before buying. Four static stations cover roughing, finishing, grooving and a boring bar; four driven stations cover, say, an axial drill, a radial drill, a tap and an end mill. A part that needs more than that means re-tooling mid-job. For the one-off and small-batch work the Alpha is aimed at, that is usually acceptable.

Power is where this model stands apart from its 2-axis twin. The main spindle is rated 18.5 kW (24.8 hp), compared with 15 kW (20.1 hp) on the Harrison Alpha 1550XS, across the same 1 - 2,000 rpm range. The larger VDI 40 interface and 3.7 kW (5.0 hp) at the tool also allow more serious milling than the small XC can attempt.

Bed lengths run to 4,000 mm (157.5 in) between centres in four steps, and the 104 mm (4.1 in) bore and 12 in (305 mm) chuck match the XS. Long shafts with keyways at both ends are the natural job. Cs axis control and a hydraulic main spindle holding brake are standard, as are the Alpha's manual and conversational modes.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • C-axis with VDI 40 / DIN 1809 driven tooling rated 3.7 kW (5.0 hp) at up to 6,000 rpm
  • 18.5 kW (24.8 hp) main spindle, more than the 15 kW (20.1 hp) of the Harrison Alpha 1550XS
  • Bed lengths up to 4,000 mm (157.5 in) between centres with milling capability along the shaft
  • 104 mm (4.1 in) spindle bore on a D1-11 camlock nose
  • Hydraulic main spindle holding brake and Cs axis control are standard

Limitations

  • Only 4 of the 8 turret stations are driven
  • Eight stations in total limits tool variety on complex parts
  • Main spindle speed tops out at 2,000 rpm
  • No Y-axis is listed for off-centre features

Best For

Long shafts with keyways, cross holes or drive flats up to 4,000 mm (157.5 in) Flanged parts with bolt circles within the 554 mm (21.8 in) swing Repair and prototype work finished in one setup Shops needing heavier milling than a VDI 20 turret allows

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How many driven stations does the Harrison Alpha 1550XC have?

The table lists the number of tool stations as 8 with 4 driven. Tooling type is VDI 40 / DIN 1809. Driven tool spindle power is 3.7 kW (5.0 hp) and the maximum driven tool speed is 6,000 rpm.

02 How does it differ from the Harrison Alpha 1400XC?

The Harrison Alpha 1400XC is smaller, with a 400 mm (15.7 in) swing and a 9.5 kW (12.7 hp) spindle, and all 8 of its stations are driven, but on the lighter VDI 20 / DIN 5480 interface at 2.2 kW (3.0 hp). The 1550XC has fewer driven stations and more power at each one.

03 What are the turning capacities?

Swing over the bed is 554 mm (21.8 in), over the cross slide 370 mm (14.6 in) and in the gap 830 mm (32.7 in). Distance between centres is 1,500 / 2,000 / 3,000 / 4,000 mm (59.1 / 78.7 / 118.1 / 157.5 in). The chuck is 12 in (305 mm).

04 What does Colchester say the XC adds to the Alpha platform?

Full 3-axis machining, including C-axis control and driven tooling. Colchester describes the result as a MillTurn lathe that combines turning, milling, drilling and tapping in one setup. The standard features add an auto indexing driven tool turret, Cs axis control and a hydraulic main spindle holding brake.
