Overview
The Brother Speedio H550Xd1 is a compact horizontal machining center that brings Speedio high-speed architecture to a horizontal spindle configuration. The horizontal orientation provides superior chip evacuation and enables tombstone fixturing for multi-face machining without a trunnion.
X/Y/Z travels are 550 x 400 x 350 mm with a pallet size of 400 x 400 mm. The spindle runs at 16,000 rpm with 7.5 kW on BT30 taper. The tool magazine holds 22 tools with approximately 1.4-second chip-to-chip changes.
Rapids reach 60 m/min on all axes. The horizontal configuration allows gravity-assisted chip evacuation, reducing chip re-cutting and improving surface finish on blind holes and pockets. A rotary indexing table (B-axis) provides 360-degree indexing in 1-degree increments.
Positioning accuracy +/- 0.004 mm, repeatability +/- 0.002 mm. Machine weight is approximately 5,500 kg with a compact footprint by HMC standards.
The H550Xd1 competes with larger HMCs from Mazak, Okuma, and Makino but at a fraction of the cost and with faster tool changes. The trade-off is BT30 tooling and smaller envelope.
New machines price $180,000-$250,000. Used trade $90,000-$160,000.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Horizontal spindle provides superior chip evacuation vs vertical VMCs
- Tombstone fixturing enables multi-face machining without trunnion
- 360-degree B-axis indexing for 4-sided machining on tombstones
- Fast 1.4s tool changes dramatically faster than traditional HMCs
- 60 m/min rapid traverse on all axes for fast positioning
- Compact footprint by HMC standards brings horizontal machining to smaller shops
Limitations
- BT30 spindle taper limits cutting forces vs CAT40/HSK HMCs
- 22-tool magazine is small compared to traditional HMCs with 40-120 tools
- Pallet size of 400mm limits tombstone and fixture sizes
- No automatic pallet changer option like larger HMCs
- Higher cost than vertical Speedios for similar X-travel
Best For
Frequently Asked Questions
01
New $180,000-$250,000. Used $90,000-$160,000.
02
Horizontal spindle lets chips fall away from the cut, improving surface finish and tool life especially on deep pockets and blind holes.
03
The H550Xd1 does not include an automatic pallet changer. Tombstone fixturing on the B-axis indexing table is the primary multi-face strategy.
04
Much faster tool changes (1.4s vs 5-10s), smaller footprint, lower cost. But BT30 limits cutting power and tool magazine is smaller.
05
360-degree rotary indexing table in 1-degree increments for positioning tombstone fixtures to different faces.
