Overview
The 3D Systems DMP Factory 500 is a large-format, production-scale direct metal printing system with a 500 x 500 x 500 mm build volume and three 500W fiber lasers. Designed from the ground up for factory-floor metal additive manufacturing, the Factory 500 incorporates automated powder handling, the removable print module (RPM) system, and vacuum chamber technology to deliver the throughput and consistency required for serial production of large metal components.
The triple-laser configuration covers the 500 x 500 mm build area with overlapping scan fields, enabling all three lasers to address any region of the build plate simultaneously, providing roughly 3x the build rate of a single-laser system of equivalent volume. The vacuum-capable build chamber achieves oxygen levels below 25 ppm, essential for processing reactive alloys like titanium and aluminum where even trace oxygen contamination degrades mechanical properties. The powder management system is fully enclosed, maintaining inert atmosphere from powder loading through build completion and part removal.
The Factory 500 modular architecture is designed for continuous production. The RPM system allows one build to be removed and a fresh module loaded in under 30 minutes while the completed build is processed offline. Powder recycling, sieving, and quality checking happen in connected modules rather than manually at the machine, reducing manual handling, improving powder traceability, and minimizing operator exposure to metal powders.
3D Systems supports the Factory 500 with the 3DXpert software suite for build preparation and the DMP Monitoring system for in-process quality assurance. Material options include LaserForm Ti Gr23 (Ti-6Al-4V ELI), LaserForm Ni718, LaserForm AlSi10Mg, and other qualified alloys. Parts qualified on the smaller DMP Flex 350 can transition to the Factory 500 without re-developing process parameters, as both machines share the same core laser and atmosphere technology.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 500 x 500 x 500 mm build volume with vacuum atmosphere enables large reactive alloy parts with superior material properties
- Triple 500W lasers with overlapping scan fields provide ~3x single-laser throughput across the full build area
- RPM system enables sub-30-minute build changeovers, maximizing production uptime in 24/7 manufacturing environments
- Automated powder handling with enclosed recycling improves traceability and minimizes operator exposure to metal powders
Limitations
- Capital investment of $1.5M–$2.5M plus facility infrastructure limits buyers to large organizations with substantial AM programs
- Proprietary LaserForm material ecosystem means higher powder costs compared to open-material LPBF systems
- Three 500W lasers provide good throughput but trail competitors offering four or more 700W–1kW lasers at comparable build volumes

Frequently Asked Questions
01
A new DMP Factory 500 system typically prices between $1.5 million and $2.5 million, depending on configuration, material packages, powder management modules, and service contracts. Total installed cost including facility preparation can be higher.
02
The Factory 500 has a much larger build volume (500x500x500mm vs 275x275x420mm), uses 3 lasers instead of 1, and includes automated powder handling. The Flex 350 is a standalone production/development system, while the Factory 500 is a fully integrated production cell. Both share the same vacuum atmosphere technology and process parameters, enabling direct scale-up.
03
The Factory 500 requires reinforced flooring, 3-phase 400V/63A power, climate control, and space for the printer plus powder management modules. Total footprint including ancillary equipment can exceed 30 square meters. Inert gas supply is also required.
