Overview

Each size has its own Z travel, listed in the same order: 500 mm / 800 mm / 1'150 mm / 1'750 mm (19.7 inch / 31.5 inch / 45.3 inch / 68.9 inch). In every size the travel is longer than the distance between centers, which leaves room to run the wheel clear of both ends of a full-length part. X travel is 370 mm (14.6 inch). Maximum travel speed is 15'000 mm/min (590 inch/min) on X and 20'000 mm/min (787 inch/min) on Z, and on the longest size that Z speed is what keeps the idle moves from one end of a shaft to the other short.

Two neighbours in the range share most of this geometry. The Studer S33 has the same 370 mm (14.6 inch) X travel and the same four Z travels, with 8 kW (10 hp) of spindle power where the S31 has 11.5 kW (15.6 hp); both top out at 3'200 rpm. The Studer S41 moves the other way: 15 kW (20 hp), 4'500 rpm, a Y travel of 100 mm (3.9 inch), and Z travels of 1'150 mm / 1'750 mm (45.3 inch / 68.9 inch) only.
