Overview
The Tsugami SS32 is a 6-axis opposed gang tool post Swiss-type CNC lathe with 32 mm bar capacity, sitting at the upper end of Tsugami's SS series lineup. It shares the same proven platform as the SS26 but opens up the capacity range for larger-diameter turned parts that are common in hydraulic fittings, automotive shafts, and industrial fastener production.
Both the main and sub-spindle top out at 8,000 RPM, which is slightly lower than the SS26's 10,000 RPM ceiling but still provides excellent surface speeds across the 32 mm capacity range. The 3.7/5.5 kW spindle motor delivers the torque needed for heavier cuts in stainless steel and alloy steels at this bar size. Live tooling runs at 5,000 RPM across up to 13 positions, with a total tooling capacity reaching 40 positions when fully loaded.
The SS32's 320 mm headstock stroke is generous for a 32mm-class machine, giving you the ability to produce longer parts in a single operation. The opposed gang tool post design eliminates turret indexing time, shaving seconds off every tool change during the cycle. For high-volume production where cycle time is money, those seconds add up fast.
Running on the FANUC 32i-B control, the SS32 offers the programming familiarity that most Swiss-type operators expect. The machine weighs 3,400 kg with a compact 2,020 x 1,675 mm footprint, identical to the SS26 since they share the same base casting. Tsugami's build quality on these machines is well-regarded in the industry, and parts availability through Tsugami America's network is generally reliable.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 32 mm bar capacity covers a sweet spot for hydraulic fittings, automotive shafts, and larger-diameter precision components
- Up to 40 tool positions with 13 live tools enables complete part production including milling, drilling, and threading in one setup
- Opposed gang tool post eliminates turret indexing time for faster cycle times on multi-tool operations
- 320 mm headstock stroke handles longer parts than many competing 32mm-class Swiss lathes
- Shares the same proven platform and footprint as the SS26, simplifying shop floor layout and maintenance training
- FANUC 32i-B control provides programming consistency across the Tsugami Swiss lineup
Limitations
- 8,000 RPM max spindle speed is lower than the SS26's 10,000 RPM, limiting surface speed on smaller diameters within the range
- No convertible guide bushing option like the SS26, so you're committed to guide bushing operation with the associated bar remnant costs
- 5,000 RPM live tool speed may limit productivity on complex milling features compared to machines offering higher cross-working speeds
- Gang tool setup complexity is higher than turret machines, requiring experienced setup personnel

Frequently Asked Questions
01
New Tsugami SS32 machines typically price between $220,000 and $340,000 depending on tooling configuration, options, and accessories like bar feeders and parts catchers. Used SS32 units from 2018-2023 sell in the $110,000-$200,000 range. The price premium over the SS26 reflects the larger capacity and associated structural upgrades.
02
The SS32L is the chucker (guide-bushless) variant of the SS32. If you're mostly running shorter parts with low L/D ratios, the SS32L saves on bar remnants by eliminating the guide bushing. The SS32 with its guide bushing is the better choice for longer parts or those requiring the superior concentricity that guide bushing operation provides.
03
Thread whirling isn't listed as a standard option on the SS32 like it is on the SS26, but Tsugami has offered it as a special option on some SS-series configurations. Check with your Tsugami distributor for current availability. If thread whirling is critical to your application, the B-series machines with turret tooling may be a better fit.
04
The SS32 works well with LNS, IEMCA, and FMB bar feeders rated for 32 mm stock. The LNS Alpha 332 and IEMCA Boss 338 are popular pairings. For production runs, a hydrodynamic bar feeder is recommended to minimize vibration and maximize surface finish quality at higher spindle speeds.
