Overview
The Tsugami SS20 is a 7-axis CNC Swiss-type automatic lathe with 20mm bar capacity that represents Tsugami's step up from the more basic B0205 platform. Where the B0205 provides 5-axis gang-type capability for straightforward Swiss work, the SS20 adds a Y-axis and C-axis (7 total controlled axes) along with 24 tool positions and dual 10,000 RPM spindles, delivering the capability to handle complex multi-feature parts that require off-center milling, angular drilling, and sophisticated backworking. The SS20 bridges the gap between entry-level Swiss machines and full-featured 8-10 axis platforms.
The dual spindle configuration is well-balanced: both main and back spindles reach 10,000 RPM with 3.7 kW (5 HP) of power each, enabling aggressive machining on both front and back operations without the back spindle becoming a bottleneck. The Y-axis enables true off-center milling for features like flats, slots, and hexes that are impossible with X/Z-only Swiss machines. With 24 tool positions—more than many competing 7-axis machines—the SS20 provides enough tooling density to complete complex parts in a single cycle, including cross-drilling, tapping, milling, and complete backworking.
The SS20 supports convertible operation between traditional sliding headstock Swiss-mode with guide bushing and fixed headstock chucker mode, giving shops the flexibility to optimize for part geometry. Maximum turning length is 9 inches (229mm), providing good capacity for medium-length components. At approximately 6,400 lbs with dimensions of 80 x 65 x 77 inches, the SS20 is a substantial machine that includes live tooling, C-axis contouring, Y-axis milling, and high-pressure coolant capability. The Fanuc control manages the 7-axis simultaneous operation with Tsugami's programming environment for multi-path processing.

Frequently Asked Questions
01
A new Tsugami SS20 typically runs $180,000-$280,000 depending on configuration, tooling package, and options. Used SS20 machines from 2008-2018 typically sell for $60,000-$130,000 depending on condition, hours, and included tooling. The SS20 is priced between Tsugami's entry-level B0205 and their more advanced Swiss platforms.
02
The SS20 adds a Y-axis (7 axes vs 5), more tool positions (24 vs 21), matched 10,000 RPM dual spindles, and a more substantial machine construction. The B0205 is more compact, less expensive, and uses a gang-type tool post for faster tool transitions. For parts that need Y-axis milling or more tooling density, the SS20 is the clear choice. For simpler turned parts where cycle time and cost-per-piece are paramount, the B0205 may be more efficient.
03
Both are 7-axis 20mm Swiss lathes competing directly. The SS20 offers more tool positions (24 vs 18) and balanced dual spindles at the same 10,000 RPM. The Star SR-20J features hydraulic-free design and Star's Motion Control System for cycle time optimization. Both are excellent machines—the choice often comes down to dealer support, operator familiarity, and specific tooling layout preferences.
04
The Y-axis enables machining features that are offset from the part centerline. This includes milling flats, cutting keyways, drilling off-center holes, creating hexagonal features, and producing D-shaped cross-sections. Without a Y-axis, these features require either creative fixturing, dedicated form tools, or secondary operations on a different machine.
05
Yes. The SS20 pairs with standard magazine bar feeders for continuous production and includes parts catching capability. The dual 10,000 RPM spindles and 24 tool positions support complete part processing without operator intervention. For best results in lights-out operation, attention to chip management through proper tooling selection and coolant delivery is important, particularly in stainless steel and other gummy materials.
