Overview
The Citizen Cincom A20 is a sliding headstock CNC automatic lathe designed as Citizen's value-oriented entry into the 20mm Swiss-type market. While the L20 is Citizen's premium 20mm platform, the A20 delivers the core Swiss-type capability—guide bushing turning, live tooling, back spindle operations—at a significantly lower price point by focusing on efficient, well-thought-out standard equipment rather than maximum configurability. With 7 axes, a main spindle reaching up to 10,000 RPM (15,000 RPM on some variants), and up to 21 tool positions including 4 live tools, the A20 packs serious production capability into an economical package.
The A20 achieves its cost advantage through smart engineering rather than capability compromise. The main spindle uses an AC motor-driven electrospindle design that delivers smooth, powerful rotation with 2.2/3.7 kW of power. The machine handles bar stock up to 20mm diameter with a maximum machining length of 165mm—shorter than the L20's 205mm but more than adequate for the vast majority of small precision components. Rapid traverse rates reach 32 m/min, keeping non-cutting time to a minimum during production runs. Citizen's own control method enables shortened cycle times through intelligent axis management.
What makes the A20 compelling is that it doesn't feel like a stripped-down machine. It comes standard with all the essential equipment and functions needed for precision Swiss-type machining, including a sub-spindle for backworking, live tooling for cross-drilling and milling, and Citizen's proven spindle and guide bushing technology. The rated power consumption of just 7.1 kVA makes it one of the most energy-efficient Swiss machines available. For shops entering the Swiss market, adding Swiss capacity, or running parts that don't require the L20's maximum flexibility, the A20 delivers Citizen quality and reliability at a price point that significantly lowers the barrier to entry.

Frequently Asked Questions
01
A new Citizen Cincom A20 typically runs $100,000-$180,000 depending on configuration and options—roughly $50,000-$100,000 less than a comparably equipped L20. Used A20 machines from 2008-2018 typically sell for $30,000-$80,000 depending on condition, hours, and included tooling. The lower entry cost makes the A20 popular with shops buying their first or second Swiss lathe.
02
The L20 is Citizen's premium 20mm Swiss platform with more model variants, longer machining length (205mm vs 165mm), LFV chip-breaking technology (on select models), and greater configuration flexibility. The A20 is designed as a value-oriented alternative that includes all essential Swiss-type functions at a lower price point. For shops running parts that fit within the A20's 165mm machining length and don't require LFV, the A20 delivers very similar part quality at significant cost savings.
03
Yes. The A20 pairs with standard bar feeders for continuous bar-fed production and includes a parts catcher for finished components. However, without LFV chip-breaking, shops machining gummy materials (316 stainless, titanium) may experience more chip-related stoppages during unattended runs compared to the LFV-equipped L20. For free-machining materials like brass, aluminum, and 12L14 steel, the A20 runs lights-out reliably.
04
The A20 handles the full range of Swiss-type materials: brass, aluminum, carbon steel, stainless steel (303, 304, 316), low-alloy steels, and engineering plastics. It can also machine titanium and nickel alloys at appropriate feeds and speeds, though the lack of LFV means chip management in these materials requires more attention to tooling selection and cutting parameters.
05
The A20 is an excellent first Swiss lathe. It provides genuine Citizen quality and precision at the lowest entry price in their lineup. The 21-tool capacity handles most part complexity requirements, and Citizen's support network helps new Swiss shops get up to speed. Many shops start with an A20, learn Swiss-type machining, and then invest in L20 or L32 machines as their Swiss work grows.
