Overview
The Tsugami B075-VR is a 5-axis Swiss-type CNC automatic lathe with 7 mm (0.275 in) bar capacity, featuring Tsugami's latest VR-generation technology. This is the full-capability version of the 7 mm platform — it includes a sub spindle running at 12,000 RPM, 4 live tool positions, and 4 sub-spindle fixed tool positions for complete front-and-back part machining in a single cycle.
The main spindle runs at 15,000 RPM driven by a 1.1/1.5 kW (2 HP) motor, while the sub spindle gets a beefier 2.2/2.5 kW (3 HP) motor at 12,000 RPM. That sub spindle power advantage is intentional — it allows more aggressive backworking operations without stalling. Total tool capacity is 21 positions across the opposed gang tool post, providing plenty of flexibility for complex multi-operation parts.
The VR series brings several important upgrades over previous generations. Ceramic ball bearings on the main spindle deliver better thermal stability, reduced vibration, and extended bearing life. Tsugami's proprietary chuck mechanism replaces the traditional toggle design with faster response and better rotational balance. The guide bushing clearance is adjustable from the tooling zone side, saving setup time. And the B075-VR includes an interference check function that helps prevent crashes during setup and production.
Running on a FANUC 0i-TF control, the B075-VR sits in a compact 1,035 x 1,585 x 1,700 mm (65 x 44 x 67 in) envelope at 2,000 kg (4,409 lb). The 32 m/min rapid traverse rate and 70 mm (2.76 in) headstock stroke with guide bushing keep cycle times competitive. This machine is a production workhorse for precision micro parts — connectors, watch components, dental implant screws, and electronics contacts.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 5-axis configuration with sub spindle enables complete front-and-back machining in a single cycle
- Ceramic ball bearings on the main spindle provide exceptional thermal stability for long production runs
- Sub spindle motor at 2.2/2.5 kW is more powerful than the main spindle, supporting aggressive backworking
- Interference check function helps prevent costly crashes during setup and new part prove-outs
- 21 tool positions with 4 live tools and 4 sub-spindle stations covers complex multi-operation parts
- Guide bushing clearance adjustable from tooling zone side reduces setup time between jobs
Limitations
- 7 mm bar capacity limits the machine to small parts — shops needing 12 mm+ must move to B012x series
- No Y-axis on the main spindle restricts off-centerline milling capability on the front side
- 15,000 RPM main spindle is strong but not as fast as the P-series machines for ultra-micro work
- At approximately $200K+, it's a significant investment for a 7 mm-class machine

Frequently Asked Questions
01
The sub spindle on the B075-VR gets a 2.2/2.5 kW motor versus 1.1/1.5 kW on the main spindle. This is intentional — backworking operations like back-turning, back-facing, and threading often need to remove material quickly to keep cycle times competitive. A more powerful sub spindle prevents stalling during aggressive back-side cuts and allows simultaneous main-side and back-side machining without power compromises.
02
The interference check function is a software feature that simulates tool paths and detects potential collisions between tools, the workpiece, and machine components before actual cutting. It's particularly valuable on Swiss machines where tool clearances are tight and gang tool posts have tools in close proximity. This feature can prevent expensive crashes during setup and program prove-outs.
03
Both are 7 mm-class Swiss machines with sub spindles. The Citizen R07 offers Citizen's LFV (Low Frequency Vibration) chip-breaking technology, which is excellent for stringy materials. The Tsugami B075-VR counters with ceramic ball bearings, the proprietary chuck mechanism, and the interference check function. Both run on FANUC controls. Dealer support and existing fleet compatibility often drive the final decision.
04
The B075-VR uses a guide bushing for sliding headstock operation, ideal for long, slender parts with high L/D ratios. The B075C is a dedicated chucker (guide-bushless) design for shorter parts where L/D is under 3:1. The chucker version eliminates guide bushing remnant loss and doesn't require ground bar stock. If most of your parts are short, the B075C saves material cost. If you run a mix of short and long parts, the B075-VR's guide bushing gives you more flexibility.
05
Tsugami's VR-series chuck mechanism replaces the traditional toggle-type collet closer found on previous generations. The new design provides quicker opening/closing response, better rotational balance at high RPM, and more consistent gripping force. This translates to better surface finish, reduced vibration marks, and faster part transfer between spindles. It's one of the key upgrades that distinguishes the VR series from the older III generation.
