Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Tongtai TMS-1800S that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Tongtai TMS-1800S is a multi-tasking turning machine with a B axis, a Y axis and a sub-spindle. The B axis swings through 240° (-30° to +210°) on a roller cam drive with 0.001° positioning. Y travel is ±105 mm (±4.1 in). Tongtai lists the machine for parts up to Ø550 mm (Ø21.7 in) in diameter and 950 mm (37.4 in) long.
Both spindles are specified alike: A2-6 nose, 8 in chuck and 6,000 rpm, with the main spindle described as built-in. Power depends on the control, 18.5/11 kW (24.8/14.8 hp) with FANUC or 26.8/20.9 kW (35.9/28.0 hp) with SIEMENS, and the sub-spindle carries the same ratings. Matched spindles mean the second operation is not restricted to light finishing. The back of the part can be cut as hard as the front. Bar capacity is Ø51 mm (Ø2.0 in).
X travel is listed as -50~655 mm (-2.0~25.8 in) and Z as 1,015 mm (40.0 in), with 40 m/min (1,575 ipm) rapids on X, Y and Z. The magazine holds 30 tools. The table gives no speed, power or taper for milling tools, so the cutting capacity of the B-axis head needs to be confirmed with Tongtai.
The control determines how the B axis can be used. The Fanuc 0i-TF Plus is listed as 4+1 axis, which means the B axis is positioned and then the cut is made. The Fanuc 31i-B5 and Siemens ONE are listed for simultaneous 5-axis machining.
The machine is 2,369 x 4,150 x 2,490 mm (93.3 x 163.4 x 98.0 in) in width, depth and height and weighs 9,900 kg (21,825 lb). For comparison the TD-2500Y, Tongtai's Y-axis turret machine, weighs 6,100 kg (13,448 lb) and turns up to Ø360-Ø410 mm (Ø14.2-Ø16.1 in) depending on the tool.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- B axis with a 240° range (-30° to +210°) on a roller cam drive with 0.001° positioning
- Sub-spindle matches the main spindle: A2-6 nose, 6,000 rpm, 8 in chuck and the same power ratings
- ±105 mm (±4.1 in) of Y travel for off-centre features
- Turning envelope of Ø550 mm (Ø21.7 in) by 950 mm (37.4 in)
- Simultaneous 5-axis machining is listed with the Fanuc 31i-B5 or Siemens ONE
- 40 m/min (1,575 ipm) rapids on X, Y and Z
Limitations
- Bar capacity is Ø51 mm (Ø2.0 in), small against a Ø550 mm (Ø21.7 in) turning diameter
- The Fanuc 0i-TF Plus version is listed as 4+1 axis, not simultaneous 5-axis
- No speed, power or taper is listed for milling tools
- Spindle power with FANUC is 18.5/11 kW (24.8/14.8 hp), below the 26.8/20.9 kW (35.9/28.0 hp) listed with SIEMENS

Frequently Asked Questions
01
With the right control. Tongtai lists the Fanuc 31i-B5 and the Siemens ONE for simultaneous 5-axis machining. The Fanuc 0i-TF Plus is listed as 4+1 axis, so on that version the B axis positions the tool at an angle and the cut is then made with the other axes.
02
The main spindle is a built-in type with an A2-6 nose, an 8 in chuck and 6,000 rpm. The sub-spindle is listed with the same nose, chuck size and speed. Power for both is 18.5/11 kW (24.8/14.8 hp) with FANUC or 26.8/20.9 kW (35.9/28.0 hp) with SIEMENS. Bar capacity is Ø51 mm (Ø2.0 in).
03
240°, from -30° to +210°. The axis is driven by a roller cam and positions in 0.001° steps. That range lets the tool face either spindle and work at angles in between, which is what allows angled holes and faces on both ends of a part.
04
Maximum turning diameter is Ø550 mm (Ø21.7 in), equal to the listed swing, and maximum turning length is 950 mm (37.4 in). Axis travels are -50~655 mm (-2.0~25.8 in) in X, ±105 mm (±4.1 in) in Y and 1,015 mm (40.0 in) in Z. Both chucks are 8 in, so large-diameter parts need workholding to suit.
05
The TMS-1800S carries its tools in a 30-tool magazine and presents them on a B axis. The TD-2500Y is a turret machine, with VDI or BMT turrets of 12 or 16 stations. The TD-2500Y has the larger spindle nose, A2-8 with a 10 in chuck and a Ø64 mm (Ø2.5 in) bar capacity, but turns shorter parts, 530-570 mm (20.9-22.4 in) depending on the tool.
