STV CNC Optimum 10 — price

Price estimate: uncertain

We have no price for the STV CNC Optimum 10 that we can cite and no estimate we can stand behind, so this page shows no number rather than a guess. A quote from STV CNC or an authorised dealer is the reliable figure.

What moves the final price

  • Spindle, control and probing options
  • Tool changer capacity and tooling package
  • Automation — pallet changers, bar feeders, robot cells
  • Freight, rigging, installation and training
  • Region, dealer and time of year

Overview

The STV CNC Optimum 10 cuts a 10 ft x 5 ft envelope, enough for a full 5 x 10 sheet or for a 4 x 8 sheet with room left beside it for a remnant. It is the servo-driven table at the top of the STV CNC range, with an enclosed welded frame and its own control computer. Of the standard sizes this is the one bought for throughput: more parts per load and fewer sheet changes.

Under the covers this is a different machine from the stepper tables. The frame is an enclosed welded tubular structure and the gantry is machined metal, with 6.75 in of clearance. Hardened heavy-duty linear guides and helical rack and pinion carry gantry and table, behind full-length shields. Three servo motors with 5:1 planetary gear reduction provide the motion, and STV CNC states an accuracy of about 0.001 in per 12 in and a step resolution of plus or minus 0.00008 in. The Z axis has 5.5 in of travel on a precision ground ball lead screw. Plate capacity is 2 in of steel over a single welded pan 4 in deep, and rollerballs for sliding material on are fitted along the table edge.

That capacity has a cost in water and floor. The pan holds about 136 gallons, which is a real job to drain and clean. The table occupies about 12 ft x 8 ft x 5 ft. It weighs 2,000 lb. A 5 x 10 sheet of plate cannot be manhandled, so overhead lifting or a forklift with a sheet lifter belongs in the plan along with the table.

Optimum CNC, the maker's own control, comes installed on a palm-sized Linux mini PC that is included and linked by Ethernet through a port on the front of the table. A monitor, wireless mouse and keyboard have to be added. The software accepts .dxf, .gcode, .nc and .tap files and includes 80+ editable shape templates, so simple parts can be drawn at the machine. Homing uses a kit of 4 proximity sensors, one of them for gantry alignment. Torch height control, an E-stop, a magnetic breakaway with cable catch and collision and material detection sensors are standard; the plasma cutter is a separate purchase.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 3 servo motors with 5:1 planetary gear reduction on helical rack and pinion
  • Stated motion accuracy of about 0.001 in per 12 in and step resolution of plus or minus 0.00008 in
  • Optimum CNC control on an included Linux mini PC, connected by Ethernet; 6.75 in of gantry clearance
  • 10 ft x 5 ft envelope for full 5 x 10 sheets, or a 4 x 8 sheet plus a remnant

Limitations

  • Ships fully built as a welded table, so delivery has to be planned around unloading equipment
  • Z travel is 5.5 in, no more than on the stepper-driven tables
  • About 136 gallons of water to fill, treat and eventually clean out
06

Best For

Production nesting on 5 x 10 sheet Long parts up to 10 ft, such as stringers, rails and trailer components Production cutting where servo accuracy of 0.001 in per 12 in is worth having

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What sheet sizes does the Optimum 10 take?

Up to 10 ft x 5 ft, so a full 5 x 10 sheet fits, and a 4 x 8 sheet leaves a strip free for a remnant or a second small job. Plate capacity is 2 in of steel. The table weighs 2,000 lb.

02 What homing and sensing does the Optimum 10 have?

An automatic homing kit with 4 proximity sensors: three for homing, which can be toggled in the software, and a fourth for gantry alignment. Torch height control, collision and material detection sensors and a magnetic breakaway with a cable catch are also standard.

03 How much space does the Optimum 10 take?

STV CNC gives the occupied area as about 12 ft x 8 ft x 5 ft. Add room to bring a 10 ft sheet in from one side and to stand at the control. The water pan holds about 136 gallons, so a drain point nearby saves work at cleaning time.

04 What makes the Optimum 10 different from the SparX PRO tables?

The drive and the control. It has 3 servo motors with 5:1 planetary gear reduction on helical rack and pinion, a machined metal gantry and hardened heavy-duty linear guides, where the PRO tables use gear-reduced steppers and an extruded aluminum gantry. It also includes the Optimum CNC control on its own Linux mini PC.
