Overview
The Mazak SYNCREX 38/8 is the standard-configuration model in the largest SYNCREX bar capacity range, offering 38 mm (1.496 in) bar capacity with 8 axes of simultaneous CNC control. This machine combines the largest Swiss-type bar capacity in the SYNCREX lineup with the proven 8-axis configuration for versatile production of complex larger precision components in medical, hydraulic, automotive, and aerospace applications.
The main spindle delivers 7.5 kW (10 hp) at 7,000 RPM through a collet system accepting bar stock up to 38 mm diameter. The sub-spindle provides 5.5 kW (7.5 hp) at 7,000 RPM for back-working operations and part pickup. The powerful spindle package handles aggressive cutting in stainless steel, titanium, and Inconel at the largest SYNCREX bar diameters. The guide bushing supports the bar at the cutting zone for Swiss-type rigidity, and is removable for non-guide-bushing mode.
The 8-axis configuration adds a cross-working axis over the 38/7, enabling off-center milling, hexagonal machining, and cross-drilling while maintaining main spindle turning. Live tooling stations powered by the 8 axes provide milling, cross-drilling, and tapping capability. Typical configurations include 22-28 tool positions combining fixed turning tools, rotary live tools, and back-working stations.
The MAZATROL SmoothG CNC control brings Mazak's conversational programming to the largest Swiss-type bar capacity in the SYNCREX range. The machine weighs approximately 4,000 kg (8,818 lb) with a footprint of roughly 3.2 x 1.6 meters. Competitors include the Citizen M32-VIII, Star SB-20R Type B, Tornos SwissDECO 36, and Tsugami SS38. New machines price between $270,000 and $400,000.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 38 mm bar capacity with 8 axes of control enables complex Swiss-type parts in the largest SYNCREX size class, covering large medical implants, hydraulic manifolds, and drivetrain components
- 7.5 kW main spindle provides the power needed for aggressive cutting in stainless steel, titanium, and Inconel at 38 mm bar diameters
- 8 axes of simultaneous control with live tooling enable complex geometries including hexagonal profiles, cross-holes, and off-center milling in a single cycle
- MAZATROL SmoothG conversational programming reduces setup time compared to traditional Swiss G-code on Citizen and Star platforms
- Removable guide bushing provides flexibility for Swiss mode or chucker mode with significant material savings at 38 mm bar diameters
- 22-28 tool positions provide good capacity for multi-feature parts with both main and sub-spindle operations
Limitations
- 7,000 RPM spindle speed is the lowest in the SYNCREX range, limiting surface speed on smaller-diameter features within the 38 mm range
- Newer entrant to Swiss-type market with limited SYNCREX track record compared to Citizen, Star, and Tornos with decades of production history
- Larger 3.2 x 1.6 meter footprint and 4,000 kg weight take more floor space than conventional Swiss machines and smaller SYNCREX models
- Tool capacity of 22-28 positions is adequate but below some high-end competitors that offer 30+ tools in this bar size class

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Base SYNCREX 38/8 configurations start around $270,000. Production-ready setups with bar feeder, parts catcher, high-pressure coolant, and full live tooling complement run $340,000-$400,000. The 38/8 is positioned between the entry 38/7 and the flagship 38/9X in both capability and price.
02
The 38/9X adds a ninth axis with a B-axis milling spindle for true 5-axis contouring capability. The 38/8 has 8 axes optimized for standard Swiss-type turning with cross-working and live tooling. If your parts require contoured surfaces, compound angles, or undercuts, the 38/9X is required. For standard Swiss turning with drilling, milling, and cross-working at 38 mm, the 38/8 provides good capability at a lower price.
03
The Citizen M32-VIII is the established leader in larger Swiss with decades of production history but maxes out at 32 mm bar capacity. The SYNCREX 38/8 offers 38 mm capacity with 8 axes and MAZATROL conversational programming. If your parts fit within 32 mm, the Citizen has the track record advantage. For parts requiring 33-38 mm bar capacity, the SYNCREX 38/8 provides the larger capacity that the M32 cannot accommodate.
04
Yes. The 7.5 kW main spindle provides strong power for Swiss-type cutting of titanium, Inconel, and other superalloys at 38 mm diameter. Use high-pressure through-tool coolant (70+ bar), carbide or ceramic tooling, and conservative feeds. The guide bushing rigidity is advantageous for these difficult materials, preventing the deflection and chatter that plague conventional lathe setups.
