How much does the INDEX G160 cost?
Price estimate
We do not have a price for the INDEX G160 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The INDEX G160 is a compact turn-mill center with 2 identical work spindles, 3 tool carriers and a motor milling spindle offered at 18,000 rpm or 32,000 rpm. Spindle clearance is 42 / 65 mm (1.7 / 2.6 in) depending on version, chucks go up to 130 / 175 mm (5.1 / 6.9 in), and turning length is 760 mm (29.9 in). The control is a Siemens Sinumerik ONE.
The two milling spindle versions are a real choice. The 18,000 rpm spindle gives 29 Nm (21.4 lb-ft), the 32,000 rpm version 17 Nm (12.5 lb-ft). The first covers general milling and drilling; the second is for very small tools, micro-drilling and fine finishing, where only high rpm brings the cutter to its proper surface speed. Tools in the milling spindle can be up to 250 mm (9.8 in) long.
Tooling capacity is large for the size. Each lower turret has 15 VDI 25 stations with W serration, all live-tool capable, and total capacity reaches up to 120 tools across magazine and turrets. Up to 3 tools can be in cut at once, and the machine has up to 16 productive axes, so cycle time on complex parts comes from overlapping operations rather than from any single spindle.
Because main and counter spindle are identical, both ends of the part get the same capability. Rapid traverse is up to 60 m/min. The bar loader interface is UNIMAG 5 for the INDEX MBL76 loader, with 3 m or 4 m bars.
Against the G200, which is listed with 660 mm (26 in) of turning length and a 165 mm (6.5 in) chuck, the G160 offers more length and much faster milling in a machine aimed at smaller diameters.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Motor milling spindle at 18,000 rpm / 29 Nm or 32,000 rpm / 17 Nm
- 2 identical work spindles, so both ends of the part get the same capability
- Up to 120 tools across magazine and turrets, with 15 live VDI 25 stations per lower turret
- Up to 3 tools in cut and up to 16 productive axes
- 760 mm (29.9 in) turning length and rapids up to 60 m/min
Limitations
- Spindle clearance is 42 / 65 mm (1.7 / 2.6 in), so bar work is limited to small and medium diameters
- Chucks go up to 130 / 175 mm (5.1 / 6.9 in), small for flange-type parts
- The 32,000 rpm milling spindle gives only 17 Nm (12.5 lb-ft)
- The table lists no main spindle speed, power or torque

Frequently Asked Questions
01
The 18,000 rpm version gives 29 Nm (21.4 lb-ft) and suits general milling and drilling. The 32,000 rpm version gives 17 Nm (12.5 lb-ft) and suits very small tools and fine finishing. Tools up to 250 mm (9.8 in) long fit the motor milling spindle.
02
Up to 120 tools across the magazine and turrets. Each lower turret has 15 VDI 25 stations with W serration, all live-tool capable. Up to 3 tools can be in cut at the same time.
03
Spindle clearance is 42 / 65 mm (1.7 / 2.6 in) and chucks go up to 130 / 175 mm (5.1 / 6.9 in), each pair depending on the spindle version. The bar loader interface is UNIMAG 5 for the INDEX MBL76 loader with 3 m or 4 m bars.
04
A Siemens Sinumerik ONE. The machine has up to 16 productive axes and 3 tool carriers, so a control able to coordinate several channels at once is part of how it reaches short cycle times.
