Overview
The Haas ST-28L is the long-bed variant of the big-bore ST-28, extending the Z-axis to 813 mm (32 in) while retaining the ST-28's 102 mm (4 in) bar capacity, 305 mm (12 in) chuck, and 29.8 kW (40 hp) spindle on an A2-8 nose. It is the smallest long-bed Haas lathe with 4-inch bore capacity, filling a critical gap for shops machining longer tube and pipe in a compact frame.
The spindle puts out 576 Nm (425 ft-lb) of torque at 325 RPM, topping out at 3,200 RPM. The 117.3 mm (4.62 in) spindle bore comfortably handles through-spindle work within the 4-inch bar range. Combined with the 12-inch chuck and A2-8 nose, the ST-28L provides heavy-duty workholding for longer large-bore parts.
Axis travels are 239 mm (9.4 in) in X and 813 mm (32 in) in Z with rapids at 24 m/min (945 ipm) on both axes. Maximum thrust forces of 18,238 N (4,100 lbf) in X and 22,686 N (5,100 lbf) in Z keep the tool engaged during heavy cuts on longer workpieces.
The ST-28L fills a specific production niche: shops running 4-inch tube and pipe on parts that exceed the standard ST-28's 572 mm (22.5 in) Z-travel but don't need the ST-35L's heavier frame or larger cutting envelope. Hydraulic cylinder manufacturers, pipe threading shops, and oil and gas component producers are the primary buyers.
At roughly $75,000-$105,000 configured, the ST-28L delivers 40 hp, 4-inch bore, and 32-inch Z-travel in a mid-size frame. The 12-station BOT turret, NGC control, and consistent Haas operator experience apply across the entire ST lineup.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 4-inch bar capacity and 4.62-inch spindle bore on a long bed handle tube and pipe work that the ST-25L cannot swallow
- 40 hp spindle with 425 ft-lb of torque provides heavy roughing power on longer large-bore parts
- 813 mm (32 in) Z-axis travel extends the ST-28's reach for longer pipe, tube, and cylindrical components
- 12-inch chuck on A2-8 nose provides heavy-duty workholding without the weight and cost of the ST-35L platform
- Same mid-size frame footprint as the ST-25L, keeping floor space manageable despite the larger bore
- At $75-105K configured, significantly cheaper than the large-frame ST-35L while matching its 4-inch bore capacity
Limitations
- 3,200 RPM max spindle speed is the lowest in the mid-size long-bed lineup, limiting surface speeds on small-diameter work
- Same 13-inch max cutting diameter as the standard ST-28 — only the Z-axis is extended
- No Y-axis option on the base ST-28L for off-center features
- 40 hp motor draws more power than the 30 hp ST-25L, increasing utility costs when not consistently using the extra power

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Base price starts around $75,000. Adding tailstock, chip conveyor, high-pressure coolant, and bar feeder interface pushes the configured price to $90,000-$105,000. The long-bed premium over the standard ST-28 is approximately $5,000-$8,000.
02
Both offer 4-inch bar capacity and 40 hp. The ST-35L has a larger cutting envelope at 381 x 1,016 mm (15 x 40 in) versus the ST-28L's 330 x 813 mm (13 x 32 in), plus a larger swing (806 vs 533 mm) and heavier casting. The ST-28L saves floor space and cost. The ST-35L extends cutting reach and adds rigidity.
03
The ST-28L extends the Z-axis from 572 mm (22.5 in) to 813 mm (32 in). The spindle, chuck, bar capacity, and power specs are identical. Choose the L variant when your parts regularly exceed 22.5 inches in turning length.
04
Yes. The 4-inch bar capacity, A2-8 spindle nose, 12-inch chuck, and 32-inch Z-travel make it well-suited for pipe threading, facing, and OD turning on standard pipe sizes up to 813 mm in length. For pipe work exceeding 32 inches, step up to the ST-35L with 40-inch Z-travel.
