Overview

The GF AgieCharmilles CUT 1000 is the large-format wire EDM in the AgieCharmilles lineup, designed for shops that need to cut big parts without compromise. With 1,000 x 550 x 400 mm (39.4 x 21.7 x 15.7 in) of X/Y/Z travel, this machine handles the kind of work that compact wire EDMs simply cannot reach: large progressive die plates, automotive stamping dies, extrusion tooling, and oversized mold components.

The IPG (Intelligent Power Generator) delivers up to 350 mm2/min cutting speed on standard tool steel. That is serious throughput for large-format work where cutting times can extend into hours or days. The generator maintains excellent surface finish quality at these speeds, with Ra 0.10 um (4 uin) achievable through standard skim pass strategies.

The table handles workpieces up to 1,500 x 1,000 x 400 mm (59.1 x 39.4 x 15.7 in) and 3,000 kg (6,614 lb). That covers virtually all progressive die work and most large mold plates. The oversized work tank provides comfortable clearance around large workpieces for dielectric circulation.

Intelligent Collision Protection (ICP) is essential on a machine this size. The system monitors all axes in real time and stops before damage occurs. Combined with the UNIQUA HMI job scheduling and automatic wire threading, the CUT 1000 runs multi-day jobs unattended.

Positioning accuracy is maintained at 3 um across the full 1,000 mm X-travel. The machine handles wire diameters from 0.10 to 0.33 mm. U/V travel is +/-75 mm for taper cutting up to +/-30 degrees.

New CUT 1000 machines price between $250,000 and $350,000. Used machines from 2015-2021 trade in the $120,000-$200,000 range.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 1,000 x 550 x 400 mm travel handles large progressive dies and oversized mold plates that compact machines cannot reach
  • 3,000 kg workpiece capacity accommodates the heaviest die plates and mold assemblies without restriction
  • IPG generator delivers 350 mm2/min cutting speed, critical for keeping cycle times manageable on large-format cuts
  • ICP collision protection is essential for complex setups on large workpieces
  • Wire range up to 0.33 mm allows fast roughing on thick sections
  • +/-75 mm U/V travel provides generous taper cutting capability

Limitations

  • Machine footprint requires significant floor space at over 13 square meters
  • Price tag of $250,000-$350,000 is out of reach for many small shops
  • 3 um accuracy across 1,000 mm is good but not exceptional versus the CUT P series
  • Dielectric volume and filtration system add to ongoing costs
  • GF service network for large-format machines is limited in some North American regions

Best For

Progressive die shops cutting large die plates exceeding compact wire EDM travel Automotive tooling manufacturers working with large mold plates Extrusion die makers needing large-format capacity Shops consolidating large-format wire EDM work onto one machine Facilities running multi-day unattended cuts on large parts Production environments where 0.33 mm wire roughing saves time on thick-section cuts

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does a GF AgieCharmilles CUT 1000 cost?

New CUT 1000 machines price between $250,000 and $350,000. Used machines from 2015-2021 sell in the $120,000-$200,000 range.

02 How does the CUT 1000 compare to the CUT 2000?

The CUT 2000 offers even larger travel for the biggest die and mold work. The CUT 1000 handles the vast majority of large-format applications at a lower price.

03 What wire sizes does the CUT 1000 support?

Wire from 0.10 to 0.33 mm diameter. The 0.33 mm option speeds up roughing on thick sections significantly.

04 Is the CUT 1000 suitable for unattended operation?

Yes. ICP, automatic threading, UNIQUA job scheduling, and 25 kg wire spools enable multi-day unattended runs.

05 Can the CUT 1000 match the finish of smaller GF wire EDMs?

Yes. The IPG generator delivers Ra 0.10 um regardless of machine size. Finish quality depends on generator and skim strategy, not travel envelope.
