Overview

The Chevalier FRG-400S is the smallest of Chevalier's rotary surface grinders: a Ø15.7 in (Ø400 mm) turntable under a horizontal wheel spindle, run by the SMART iControl. The part spins at 10 to 150 rpm while the wheel feeds across it, so a round face is ground in one continuous pass with no table reversals.

The turntable is the reason to look at this type of machine. Chevalier designs it with hydrostatic bearings, which carry the worktable on a uniform oil film and, in the maker's words, give high vibration resistance and higher rotational precision than conventional bearings. On a small table that matters most for thin rings, seal faces and valve plates, where runout of the table prints straight into the part.

Load capacity is modest at 330 lb (150 kg), and that figure includes whatever chuck or fixture holds the work. Grinding height is 13.8 in (350 mm). The wheelhead crosses 15 in (380 mm) at 0 to 9.75 fpm (0 to 3,000 mm/min) and rises 16.9 in (430 mm); both movements run on linear guideways with a ballscrew and a directly coupled servo motor.

The wheel is Ø14 in x 1.5 in x Ø5 (Ø355 x 38 x Ø127 mm), driven by a 10 hp (7.5 kW) motor between 500 and 2,200 rpm. That is the same spindle, wheel and 110.2 in x 110.2 in x 102.8 in (2,800 x 2,800 x 2,610 mm) enclosure as the larger FRG-600S, so the choice between the two comes down to table diameter and load. The FRG-400S weighs 7,500 lb (3,400 kg).

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Hydrostatic turntable bearings carry the table on an oil film for high vibration resistance, per the maker
  • Table speed of 10 to 150 rpm suits small diameters that need high surface speed at the work
  • In-machine dynamic balancing limits wheel vibration to less than 1 um, according to Chevalier
  • 10 hp (7.5 kW) spindle on a table only Ø15.7 in (Ø400 mm) across
  • Adaptive finish program adjusts table rotation, infeed speed and wheel speed

Limitations

  • Table load is limited to 330 lb (150 kg), fixture included
  • The 110.2 in x 110.2 in footprint is the same as the larger FRG-600S, so the small table saves no floor
  • The maker's maximum grinding radius cell for this model is not printed cleanly and is not shown here
  • Spindle speed tops out at 2,200 rpm

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How large a part fits the Chevalier FRG-400S?

The rotary table is Ø15.7 in (Ø400 mm) and carries up to 330 lb (150 kg). Maximum grinding height is 13.8 in (350 mm), and the distance between the table and the spindle centerline is 19.7 in (500 mm). The maker's grinding radius cell for this model is garbled on its page, so that row is left out here.

02 What is a hydrostatic turntable?

It is a rotary table that floats on pressurised oil instead of running on rolling bearings. Chevalier states that the hydrostatic bearings support the worktable through a uniform oil film, giving the mechanism high vibration resistance and higher rotational precision than conventional bearings.

03 What wheel and spindle does the FRG-400S use?

The wheel row reads Ø14 in x 1.5 in x Ø5 (Ø355 x 38 x Ø127 mm). The spindle motor is 10 hp (7.5 kW) and spindle speed runs from 500 to 2,200 rpm. Chevalier says the spindle is supported by six Class 7 (P4) angular contact ball bearings that can withstand heavy-duty grinding.

04 How do the FRG-400S and FRG-600S differ?

Table and load. The FRG-600S has a Ø23.6 in (Ø600 mm) table rated for 882 lb (400 kg), and it weighs 7,700 lb (3,500 kg). The FRG-400S has a Ø15.7 in (Ø400 mm) table rated for 330 lb (150 kg) and weighs 7,500 lb (3,400 kg). Travels, spindle, wheel and floor space are listed the same.
