Victor Taichung Vturn-45/425

The Victor Taichung Vturn-45/425 is the largest horizontal lathe in the maker's line by both length and bore. It turns 4,305 mm (169.48 in) between a 15 in chuck and the tailstock, and passes Ø117.5 mm (Ø4.62 in) through an A2-11 spindle that runs to 2,000 rpm.

Nothing about it is small. The 2 Axis machine weighs 22,000 kg (48,501.63 lb), the C Axis machine 22,300 kg (49,163.02 lb) and the Y Axis machine 22,500 kg (49,603.94 lb). A buyer is specifying a building as much as a machine: the bay length, the crane, the foundation and the route in.

The diameter rows read slightly differently here than on the other Vturn-45 beds. Maximum turning diameter is Ø620 mm (Ø24.4 in), Ø580 mm (Ø22.83 in) and Ø520 mm (Ø20.47 in) for the 2 Axis, C Axis and Y Axis columns, as usual. The standard turning diameter, though, is Ø492 mm (Ø19.37 in) for both live-tool columns and Ø520 mm (Ø20.47 in) for the 2 Axis machine. The turret carries 10 tools or 12.

Work for this machine is long and hollow or long and heavy. Marine shafts, mill rolls, large hydraulic rods and pipe are typical of what the figures allow. The maker lists a large spindle bore of 135mm and an 18 in chuck as available, and a steady rest in manual or hydraulic form as an option.
