Overview
The Trumpf TruBend Cell 5000 Lean (officially the Lean Edition) is a more compact, more affordable version of Trumpf's flagship automated bending cell. Built around a TruBend 5085 press brake at 850 kN (85 metric tons) with a 2,210 mm bending length, paired with a BendMaster 60 robot on a 6-meter track, it delivers automated bending capability in a smaller footprint and at a lower price point than the full Cell 5000. For shops that want to step into automated bending without the six-figure-plus jump to a full-size cell, the Lean Edition makes the economics work.
The press brake core is the TruBend 5085 -- the smallest model in the Series 5000 lineup but still packing all the platform's core technology. You get the On-Demand Servo Drive for energy-efficient operation, 6-axis backgauge, CNC-controlled crowning, and the Touchpoint TruBend control. Rapid approach speed hits 200 mm/s with a maximum bending speed of 25 mm/s. The 615 mm usable open height and 420 mm throat depth handle standard tooling configurations for light-to-medium gauge sheet metal work.
The BendMaster 60 robot is the smaller of Trumpf's two bending robot options, with a 60 kg carrying capacity and the ability to handle parts up to 2,000 x 1,000 mm. Maximum part weight for bending is 40 kg. The robot travels on a 6-meter floor-mounted track alongside the press brake, picking blanks from a loading station, presenting them for bending, and placing finished parts in an unloading area. Sheet stack height for loading goes up to 700 mm, and finished part storage accommodates stacks up to 1,000 mm.
The Lean Edition handles minimum sheet thickness of 0.7 mm and processes profile lengths up to 2,000 mm. That covers the vast majority of small-to-medium part bending work in contract fabrication -- brackets, enclosures, channels, mounting plates, and similar components that make up the bread and butter of most sheet metal shops.
What makes the Lean Edition "lean" compared to the full Cell 5000 is primarily the smaller press brake (85 tons vs. up to 320 tons), the shorter robot track, and a simplified material handling configuration. You trade maximum part size and tonnage capacity for a smaller footprint and significantly lower entry cost. The Lean Edition doesn't typically include the ToolMaster automatic tool changer that comes with the full Cell 5000, so tool changes between different part families still require operator intervention.
New TruBend Cell 5000 Lean configurations typically run $400,000 to $700,000 depending on options, tooling packages, and conveyor configurations. That's a meaningful savings over the $600,000 to $1,200,000+ range of the full Cell 5000. The basic machine weight is 7,800 kg plus 595 kg for the BendMaster and 310 kg per 2,000 mm floor track element.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Entry point into Trumpf automated bending at $400K-$700K -- significantly less than the full Cell 5000's $600K-$1.2M range while retaining core automation capability
- Compact footprint built around the TruBend 5085 fits in shops where a full-size Cell 5000 wouldn't physically work
- BendMaster 60 robot handles parts up to 2,000 x 1,000 mm and 40 kg, covering the majority of small-to-medium sheet metal bending work
- All TruBend Series 5000 core technology included: On-Demand Servo Drive, 6-axis backgauge, CNC crowning, Touchpoint TruBend control
- 700 mm sheet stack loading and 1,000 mm finished part storage enable extended unattended operation for batch production runs
- 0.7 mm minimum sheet thickness capability handles thin-gauge precision work for electronics, medical, and consumer product enclosures
Limitations
- 85-ton press force and 2,210 mm bending length limit the cell to small and medium parts -- larger or heavier gauge work requires the full Cell 5000
- Typically does not include ToolMaster automatic tool changer, meaning tool changes between part families still require operator intervention
- Still a $400K+ investment that requires significant part volume and shift coverage to achieve reasonable payback
- 40 kg maximum part weight limits the cell to lighter sheet metal work -- heavier parts need the BendMaster 150 in the full Cell 5000
- Trumpf's proprietary ecosystem means all software, service, and future upgrades come through Trumpf at premium pricing

Frequently Asked Questions
01
New TruBend Cell 5000 Lean configurations typically run $400,000 to $700,000 depending on tooling packages, conveyor options, and ACB angle measurement configuration. That's a meaningful savings over the full Cell 5000's $600,000 to $1,200,000+ range. Installation, commissioning, safety fencing, and operator training add to the total investment.
02
The Lean Edition uses the smaller TruBend 5085 (85 tons, 2,210 mm) while the full Cell 5000 offers models up to the 5320 (320 tons, 4,420 mm). The Lean has only the BendMaster 60 (40 kg max part weight), while the full cell offers the BendMaster 150 (100 kg). The Lean typically omits the ToolMaster automatic tool changer. The full Cell 5000 handles larger, heavier, and more complex parts with more automation.
03
Yes, within its material capacity. With 700 mm sheet stack loading and 1,000 mm finished part storage, the cell can run unattended for extended periods on batch production. The limiting factors are blank supply, finished part storage capacity, and whether tool changes are needed between parts. For single-tool-setup production runs, true lights-out operation is achievable.
04
Parts under 2,000 mm in length, under 40 kg, and in sheet thickness of 0.7 mm and up. Typical sweet-spot parts include small enclosures, brackets, mounting plates, channels, and electronic housings in mild steel, stainless, or aluminum up to about 3-4 mm thickness at full bending length. Parts requiring more than 85 tons of force or longer bending lengths need the full Cell 5000.
05
The standard Lean Edition configuration does not include the ToolMaster automatic tool changer that's available on the full Cell 5000. This means tool changes between different part families require operator intervention. For shops running multiple part families per shift, this is the key limitation versus the full Cell 5000. Contact Trumpf to discuss ToolMaster integration options for the Lean configuration.
06
The Lean Edition's advantage is turnkey integration from Trumpf -- press brake, robot, and control software engineered as a system. Third-party solutions (robot integrators pairing KUKA/ABB robots with various press brakes) can be more flexible and sometimes less expensive, but you manage multiple vendors and bear the integration risk. The Lean Edition is the lower-risk path to automated bending for shops that want a proven, supported package.
