Overview
The Mazak SLANT TURN 500M is the milling-equipped variant of the SLANT TURN 500, combining heavy-duty large-diameter turning with live tooling and C-axis capability for done-in-one processing of complex parts. The 500M adds cross-drilling, tapping, and contour milling to the base platform without sacrificing the turning capacity that defines the SLANT TURN series.
The SLANT TURN 500M shares the same fundamental platform as the 500: an 18-inch minimum chuck, 910 mm (35.83 in) maximum turning diameter, and 185 mm (7.28 in) spindle bore. The main spindle delivers 37 kW (50 hp) at up to 1,800 RPM. Turning lengths range from 1,082 mm (42.60 in) on the short bed to 4,099 mm (161.38 in) on the extra-long bed, with intermediate options at 2,075 mm (81.69 in) and 3,210 mm (126.38 in) -- slightly longer than the base 500 due to the milling turret geometry.
The key differentiator is the milling turret with BMT live tooling, C-axis indexing on the main spindle, and a dedicated milling motor. This enables off-center drilling, bolt-hole patterns, keyway cutting, flat milling, and tapping directly on the lathe. For large parts that would otherwise require a separate machining center setup, the 500M eliminates the crane move and rechucking, saving significant handling time and improving positional accuracy.
MAZATROL SmoothG handles both turning and milling programming with conversational cycles, making the transition from pure turning to mill-turn operations straightforward for operators. The control manages C-axis positioning and live tool speed coordination.
New SLANT TURN 500M machines price between $260,000 and $420,000 depending on bed length and options. The 500M competes with the Okuma LB45 II MY, Doosan Puma 600M, and DMG Mori NLX 6000.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- BMT live tooling with C-axis eliminates secondary machining center operations on large parts
- 7.28-inch spindle bore handles through-spindle pipe and tubular work up to 7 inches
- 35.83-inch max turning diameter accommodates large flanges, valve bodies, and castings
- Four bed lengths from 42 to 161 inches provide flexibility from short chucking to long shaft work
- 37 kW spindle with high torque enables aggressive roughing at large diameters
- MAZATROL SmoothG with integrated mill-turn programming simplifies mixed turning and milling operations
Limitations
- $40K-$60K premium over the base SLANT TURN 500 may not be justified for pure turning applications
- 1,800 RPM spindle speed limits surface speed on smaller-diameter work within the envelope
- 12,000 kg machine weight requires reinforced concrete foundation and crane access for installation
- Live tool power at 5.5 kW is adequate for drilling and tapping but limited for heavy milling operations

Frequently Asked Questions
01
New pricing ranges from $260,000 for the short-bed to $420,000 for the extra-long bed with full options. The M variant adds approximately $40,000-$60,000 over the base SLANT TURN 500 for live tooling and C-axis capability.
02
Cross-drilling, tapping, bolt-hole patterns, keyway cutting, flat milling, and contouring using the BMT live tooling turret with C-axis. The 5.5 kW live tool motor handles typical secondary operations but is not a substitute for a full machining center on heavy milling jobs.
03
The 550M steps up to a 21-inch chuck with a 10.83-inch spindle bore for even larger workpieces and through-spindle capacity. The 500M uses an 18-inch chuck with 7.28-inch bore. Both share the same max turning diameter of 35.83 inches.
04
The standard SLANT TURN 500M does not include Y-axis. Milling is done with C-axis positioning and live tooling on the turret centerline. For off-center milling requiring Y-axis, consider the Quick Turn 450MY or INTEGREX series.
