Overview
The DN Solutions SMX 2100 B is the big-bore variant of the SMX 2100 multitasking platform, stepping up to a 10-inch chuck with 512 Nm (377.6 ft-lb) of main spindle torque. If the standard SMX 2100 is a premium multitasking machine, the B variant is the one you buy when your parts are heavier, tougher, or larger in diameter and you can't compromise on torque.
The main spindle runs at 4,000 RPM with 22 kW (29.5 hp) and that 512 Nm of torque — nearly 10% more than the standard model's 467 Nm. The 10-inch chuck expands your part envelope, and the 600 mm (23.6 in) max turning diameter with 1,040 mm (40.9 in) turning length covers the work that a 10-inch chuck was designed for: mid-to-large shaft work, flanges, housings, and components in stainless, alloy steel, Inconel, and other tough materials.
The B-axis milling head carries over from the standard SMX 2100 — this is a dedicated milling spindle with independent motor and speed control, not just live tooling in a turret. You get real milling performance for face milling, contour milling, thread milling, and boring operations. Combined with C-axis and Y-axis capability, the SMX 2100 B is a true 5-axis multitasking center.
At 15,000 kg (33,069 lb), the B variant is slightly heavier than the standard model, reflecting the larger chuck and more robust headstock construction. The 4,845 x 2,770 mm footprint stays the same. DN Solutions equips this machine with the Fanuc 31i-B5 control for the multi-axis processing power that complex multitasking programs demand.
The SMX 2100 B fills a specific niche: shops that need the SMX platform's premium multitasking capability but find the 8-inch chuck too limiting for their part range. It's one step below the SMX 2600 in the lineup and provides a more accessible entry to big-bore multitasking.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 512 Nm main spindle torque handles the heaviest roughing operations in stainless, alloy steel, and Inconel
- 10-inch chuck expands the part envelope beyond the standard SMX 2100's 8-inch limit
- Dedicated B-axis milling head provides real milling capability at proper feeds and speeds
- 600 mm turning diameter with 1,040 mm length covers the full range of 10-inch chuck work
- 15,000 kg machine weight ensures stability during both heavy turning and precision milling
- Same footprint as the standard SMX 2100 — the upgrade costs space only in the vertical direction
Limitations
- 4,000 RPM main spindle is 1,000 RPM slower than the standard model — limits surface speed on small diameters
- No sub-spindle on the base B model — back-end work needs the SB variant at additional cost
- $370,000+ entry price requires strong utilization to achieve payback
- Fanuc 31i-B5 programming requires more expertise than simpler controls
- 15,000 kg weight demands reinforced floors — verify your foundation before committing

Frequently Asked Questions
01
New SMX 2100 B machines run $370,000-$500,000 depending on configuration and tooling. The big-bore upgrade adds $20-30K over the standard SMX 2100. Adding a sub-spindle (SB variant) pushes the price higher still.
02
Choose the B when your parts need a 10-inch chuck for diameter or clamping force, or when you're regularly machining tough materials where the extra 45 Nm of torque matters. If most of your work fits in an 8-inch chuck and you value the extra 1,000 RPM, stick with the standard.
03
The SMX 2600 steps up to a 660 mm turning diameter, higher torque (690-724 Nm), and longer turning lengths. It's the next size class up for shops that need more capacity. The SMX 2100 B covers 10-inch chuck work at a lower price and smaller footprint than the 2600 series.
04
Most major CAM systems support the SMX platform through DN Solutions/Doosan post processors — Mastercam, GibbsCAM, Esprit, and Siemens NX all have proven posts. Your DN Solutions distributor can provide recommended post processors and test programs.
