Overview
The INDEX R300 is a CNC multi-spindle automatic lathe engineered for the high-volume production of precision turned parts from bar stock. Featuring six CNC-controlled spindles arranged in a drum configuration, the R300 machines multiple workpieces simultaneously, achieving cycle times that are a fraction of those possible on single-spindle machines. This architecture makes the R300 one of the most productive turning platforms available for parts with diameters up to 32 mm.
Each of the R300's six spindles is independently driven by a synchronous motor, enabling different speeds to be programmed at each position for optimum cutting conditions. Cross slides and vertical slides at each spindle position carry turning and form tools, while up to two positions can be equipped with live tooling for drilling, milling, and thread cutting without leaving the machine. The result is a complete multi-operation part produced every drum index — typically every few seconds in production.
INDEX designed the R300 around a thermally symmetric, polymer concrete-reinforced machine base that absorbs vibration and resists thermal deformation across long production runs. The machine's centralized CNC architecture — running on a Siemens or proprietary INDEX control — coordinates all spindle and slide motions with microsecond precision, ensuring consistent part quality across millions of cycles.
For manufacturers in the automotive fastener, hydraulics, pneumatics, and electronics connector markets, the INDEX R300 represents a decisive competitive tool. Its ability to produce complex turned components — including those with cross-drilled holes, thread-whirled features, and polygon turning — at rates that single-spindle machines cannot approach makes it the preferred platform for dedicated high-volume production lines.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Six simultaneous spindles deliver output rates no single-spindle machine can match
- Independently programmable spindle speeds optimize cutting conditions at every position
- Live tooling capability enables cross-drilling, milling, and threading in-cycle
- Polymer concrete-reinforced base provides excellent vibration damping and thermal stability
- Sub-second drum indexing keeps cycle times exceptionally short for high-volume runs
Limitations
- Very high capital investment — ROI requires sustained high-volume production
- Setup and changeover are more time-consuming than single-spindle machines, not suited for short runs
- Requires skilled operators and programmers familiar with multi-spindle cycle balancing

Frequently Asked Questions
01
The INDEX R300 handles bar stock up to 32 mm in diameter. This covers the majority of high-volume precision turned component applications in automotive, hydraulics, pneumatics, and electronics, where most parts fall well within this diameter range.
02
In a multi-spindle machine, all six spindles work simultaneously. Each spindle position performs a different operation on a different workpiece at the same time. When the drum indexes, each part advances to the next operation. The result is that a finished part is completed every drum index cycle — typically every few seconds — rather than completing one full cycle per part as on a single-spindle machine.
03
Yes. The R300 supports live tooling at up to two spindle positions as standard, enabling cross-drilling, transverse milling, and thread cutting without secondary operations. Additional live tool positions can be specified at time of order to support more complex part geometries.
04
The R300 is optimized for sustained high-volume production. Its setup and changeover complexity, combined with the high capital cost, mean it is most cost-effective on dedicated part families with large annual volumes — typically hundreds of thousands to millions of pieces. For lower volumes, INDEX's single-spindle or twin-spindle turning centers offer more flexibility.
05
The R300 is available with Siemens 840D sl as the base control platform, coordinated through INDEX's own multi-spindle software environment. This gives operators access to standard Siemens programming while benefiting from INDEX's specialized cycle balancing and drum indexing management software.
