Overview

The DMG Mori DMU 85 h FD monoBLOCK is the large-format single-table variant of the horizontal 5-axis monoBLOCK mill-turn platform. As the DMU version, it operates with a single rotary table rather than the pallet-changer system on the DMC variant, making it better suited for job shops and prototype work where flexibility trumps pallet-change automation.

Travel measures 850 x 1,150 x 900 mm (33.5 x 45.3 x 35.4 in), providing a generous work envelope for large aerospace, energy, and industrial components. Maximum workpiece capacity reaches 1,040 mm (40.9 in) diameter and 1,000 mm (39.4 in) height at up to 1,000 kg (2,205 lb). The swivelling rotary table with bilateral bearings handles components up to 1,000 kg for simultaneous 5-axis contouring.

The FD (FreeDrive) turning function delivers rotational speeds up to 800 RPM for integrated facing, boring, and grooving operations on combined-feature parts. The horizontal spindle orientation ensures gravity-assisted chip evacuation during both milling and turning, preventing chip packing in deep cavities that plagues vertical machines working in steel and cast iron.

Spindle options include HSK-A63 standard and HSK-A100 for heavy cutting, supporting tools up to 280 mm (11 in) diameter and 29.5 kg (65.1 lb). The one-piece cast iron monoBLOCK construction with 3-point support achieves long-term accuracy of 5 µm (0.0002 in) through thermosymmetric design. The mill-turn variant supports FD turning at up to 800 RPM. Floor space covers approximately 17.5 m² (188 sq ft). Control options include SIEMENS SINUMERIK ONE or HEIDENHAIN TNC7 with CELOS X. New machines price between $475,000 and $675,000. Specs sourced from DMG Mori published data.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 1,040 mm max workpiece diameter handles large aerospace and energy sector components that smaller platforms cannot accommodate
  • 1,000 kg table load supports heavy castings, forgings, and complex multi-part fixtures
  • 850 x 1,150 x 900 mm travel envelope is among the largest in the monoBLOCK horizontal family
  • Horizontal FD mill-turn eliminates separate lathe operations while providing gravity-assisted chip evacuation
  • HSK-A100 option with up to 430 Nm torque enables aggressive roughing in steel, cast iron, and titanium
  • Thermosymmetric design achieves 5 µm accuracy on parts up to a meter in diameter

Limitations

  • No pallet changer on the DMU variant -- consider DMC 85 h FD for pallet-change production
  • 800 RPM max FD turning speed limits turning productivity compared to smaller-table platforms
  • 17.5 m² footprint requires significant floor space allocation
  • Starting at $475K, the large-format platform demands sufficient large-part workload to justify the investment

Best For

Aerospace manufacturers producing large structural components and housings with combined milled and turned features Energy sector production of large valve bodies, pump housings, and turbine components up to 1,040 mm diameter Heavy equipment manufacturers machining large castings and forgings up to 1,000 kg with multi-sided access needs Job shops requiring flexible large-format horizontal 5-axis mill-turn without pallet automation investment Prototype and low-volume production of large combined-feature parts where setup flexibility matters most

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does a DMU 85 h FD monoBLOCK cost?

New machines price $475,000-$675,000 depending on spindle selection, tool magazine size, and control choice. The DMU single-table variant costs approximately $25,000-$50,000 less than the DMC pallet-changer version.

02 DMU 85 h FD vs DMC 85 h FD -- when do I need the pallet changer?

Choose the DMC when you have repeat production work that benefits from load-while-cutting automation. The DMU is more cost-effective for job shops, prototyping, and mixed work where pallet-change overhead is not justified.

03 How does the 85 compare to the 65 in the h FD monoBLOCK family?

The 85 adds 200 mm more X-travel, 200 mm more Y, 200 mm more Z, and 400 kg more table load. Maximum workpiece diameter grows from 840 to 1,040 mm. Choose the 85 for parts exceeding the 65's capacity; the 65 saves $100K+ for medium-sized work.

04 What control options are available?

SIEMENS SINUMERIK ONE or HEIDENHAIN TNC7, both with CELOS X interface and unified mill-turn programming for seamless milling-to-turning transitions.
