Overview

The ANCA SX7 is a heavy-duty 5-axis CNC tool grinder built for sharpening and forming operations on larger, heavier cutting tools including inserted cutters, shell mills, face mills, and other tooling that exceeds the capacity of ANCA's standard tool grinders. Where the FX7 and MX7 optimize for production of new shank-type round tools, the SX7 is designed for the sharpening, reconditioning, and forming of the larger and more varied tools encountered in industrial toolroom and reconditioning operations.

The SX7 handles workpieces up to 320 mm (12.6 in) diameter and 300 mm (11.8 in) face width, with a maximum tool weight of 50 kg (110 lb) — significantly heavier than any other ANCA model. The machine structure is correspondingly more robust, with a heavier cast iron base and larger linear motor drives to maintain positioning accuracy under the increased workpiece loads.

The grinding spindle delivers 25 kW (33.5 HP) peak power with a maximum wheel diameter of 250 mm (9.8 in). Five simultaneous CNC axes provide the full coordinate motion needed for complex relief and rake grinding: X-axis travel 500 mm (19.7 in), Y-axis 400 mm (15.7 in), Z-axis 400 mm (15.7 in), with continuous A and C axes. The SX7 includes an integrated dressing unit as standard to maintain wheel form during long sharpening runs.

The SX7 runs ANCA's ToolRoom software with sharpening-specific modules for inserted milling cutters, boring bars, and form tools. ANCA's AutoSet laser system integrates for in-process measurement of insert seats and cutting edges.

New SX7 machines typically price in the $300,000-$450,000 range. They are occasionally available used in the $150,000-$240,000 range.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 50 kg tool weight capacity and 320 mm diameter range enable sharpening of inserted milling cutters and shell mills that no other ANCA model can handle
  • Integrated dressing unit as standard supports long sharpening runs without manual wheel redressing downtime
  • Continuous A and C axes allow grinding of complex insert seat geometries and form-ground tools without repositioning
  • Same ANCA ToolRoom software platform as the FX7 and MX7 means operator knowledge and programs transfer within the ANCA ecosystem
  • 400 mm Z-travel accommodates long-body boring bars and deep-body shell mills that shorter machines restrict
  • Heavy-duty construction with robust linear drives maintains geometric accuracy despite the high workpiece mass

Limitations

  • Large footprint of 2,500 x 2,000 mm requires substantial floor space, more than any other ANCA tool grinder
  • 50 kg maximum workpiece weight requires appropriate workholding and handling equipment that adds to setup complexity
  • Not optimized for high-volume new tool production — shops primarily making new shank tools should look at FX7 or MX7
  • Used market is thin, making secondary market sourcing difficult and less price-competitive than FX7/MX7
  • 250 mm wheel diameter, while larger than other ANCA models, still limits face width for the widest shell mills at the machine's capacity limit

Best For

Industrial toolrooms and reconditioning shops that sharpen and recondition inserted milling cutters, face mills, and boring bars Large manufacturing facilities with in-house tool reconditioning departments handling heavy cutting tool inventories Aerospace and energy sector toolrooms sharpening specialized form tools, countersinks, and large-diameter drills Shops that need to grind both shank-type tools on ANCA FX/MX machines and larger inserted tooling on a single ANCA software platform Tool manufacturers producing custom form cutters and special-profile tools in the 100-320 mm diameter range

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the ANCA SX7 designed for?

The SX7 is designed primarily for sharpening and forming operations on large-diameter and heavy cutting tools — inserted milling cutters, shell mills, face mills, boring bars, and custom form tools in the 50-320 mm diameter range. It complements ANCA's FX7 and MX7 (which focus on new production of round shank tools) by covering the heavy-tool applications those machines cannot reach.

02 Can the SX7 also produce new tools, or only sharpen existing ones?

The SX7 can grind new custom form tools and special cutters from scratch, not just resharpen existing tools. Its five simultaneous axes and ToolRoom software support the full range of grinding operations. However, for high-volume production of standard end mills and drills, the MX7 or FX7 are better optimized for that workflow.

03 How does the SX7 compare to the ANCA TX7?

The TX7 is ANCA's largest production tool grinder optimized for heavy-duty production of large round tools up to 25 mm in very high volumes. The SX7 targets larger-diameter but lower-volume work — sharpening, reconditioning, and forming of inserted tooling and disc-type cutters up to 320 mm. The SX7 handles heavier workpieces (50 kg vs. TX7's production focus), while the TX7 targets throughput on standard tool geometries.

04 What is the ANCA SX7 price?

New ANCA SX7 machines typically price between $300,000 and $450,000 depending on configuration and options. Used units appear occasionally in the $150,000-$240,000 range, though the thinner used market means pricing varies more than with FX7 and MX7 models.
