Which CNC Machines Are Machinists Actually Talking About? September 2026

Machinists talk about the machines they run, fix, and argue over — and that conversation is scattered across three forums and a decade of YouTube. This report consolidates it. Every one of the 4,260 industrial CNC machines in the MachineToolIndex catalogue was re-scanned on 3 September 2026 for documented community threads on Practical Machinist, CNCZone and Reddit, and for attributed YouTube coverage.

The headline number is the MTI Forum & Coverage Index at 112, up one point from the May inaugural reading of 111. That is a small move, and it should be: the index measures the community footprint of an installed base that changes slowly. What moved underneath it is more interesting.

What changed since May

• Coverage is nearly universal. 2,753 of 4,260 machines (65%) now have at least one documented forum thread and 3,849 (90%) have attributed video. Both ratios are unchanged from May to within a point, which says the long tail — small European and Asian builders — is discussed roughly as often as the mainstream, just in smaller absolute numbers.
• The three-forum split stayed balanced. CNCZone 7,262, Practical Machinist 7,216, Reddit 7,186. No single community dominates US CNC discussion, and that has held for two readings now.
• The discussion collector’s ceiling was raised. In May, the top machines all sat at twelve threads because that was the per-machine cap. It is now higher, which is why the top of the list finally separates: machines that were tied at twelve in May now range from fifteen to twenty-one.
• The catalogue was consolidated. Since May, 199 duplicate machine pages were folded into their canonical twins, so per-machine counts below are for one page per machine.

The most-discussed machines

Three things stand out.

The top of the list is not the top of the sales charts. The GF CUT AM 500 (a wire-EDM built for cutting metal additive parts off their build plates) leads at 21 threads, followed by the Davenport Model B — a multi-spindle screw machine whose design predates CNC and which machinists have been rebuilding, retrofitting and arguing about for decades — and the Schütte SC 12. Community attention concentrates on machines that are hard: niche processes, old iron with a cult following, and multi-spindle automatics that take real skill to set up.

Mainstream production machines do appear, but further down. The Doosan DNM 6700 at 19 threads and the Okuma GENOS M460-VE at 17 are the highest-placed conventional machining centres. The INDEX G200 turn-mill centre sits between them at 18. These are the machines shops actually buy in volume, and the thread counts reflect owners comparing notes rather than enthusiasts.

Video and forum attention diverge. The Okuma LB3000 EX II has 161,795 attributed video views but only 15 threads; the GF CUT AM 500 has 23,454 views and the most threads of any machine. Videos are made by manufacturers and dealers; threads are started by owners. When a machine ranks high on threads and low on video, that is owners doing the talking.

Manufacturers by community volume

DMG Mori leads at 1,301 threads across 252 machines, with Makino (1,070 across 133), Mazak (1,043 across 293), Okuma (1,015 across 137) and Haas (962 across 212) close behind.

Per machine, the ranking inverts. Makino averages eight threads per catalogued machine and Okuma seven; Mazak and DN Solutions (691 across 371) average under four, because their catalogues are broad and much of the range is production tooling that gets bought, run and rarely discussed. Hurco is the outlier: 593 threads across only 79 machines — seven and a half per machine — which fits its reputation as the brand small shops talk each other into.

The most-compared machines

A different signal: not who talks about a machine, but which machines get put side by side when someone is deciding. The DMG Mori CMX 50 U appears in 24 comparisons, the Okuma GENOS M460-VE in 23 and the Haas CM-1 in 22. The GENOS M460-VE is the only machine in the top ten of both lists — heavily discussed and heavily compared — which is about as clear a signal of active buyer interest as this dataset produces. Where the catalogue stands

Two honesty notes on the catalogue itself. First, 190 machines carry a manufacturer-published list price; every other price on the site is an estimate and is labelled as one. Second, 2,264 machines have specifications crawled directly from the manufacturer’s own site and cite it; the rest are compiled from literature and say so on the page.

What this issue does not cover

The May report launched six indices. Three of them — used pricing (eBay), auction distress (BidSpotter) and the external portion of the materials index — depend on collectors that have not run since, and they remain pending. Rather than publish a “State of the Market” issue with half its indices blank, this issue reports only what was actually regenerated: the community-attention data, which comes entirely from the catalogue and is reproducible by anyone with the repository.
