Overview
The Makino EDNC-10 is a large-format production sinker EDM that occupies a critical position in Makino's lineup — big enough for serious large-cavity work, yet compact enough to be practical for shops that don't need the enormous EDNC-15 or EDNC-17. It is one of the most versatile machines in the EDNC series for shops handling a mix of medium and large mold and die work.
The EDNC-10 delivers axis travel of 600 x 450 x 400 mm (23.6 x 17.7 x 15.7 in) on X/Y/Z. This envelope covers a wide range of mold cavities — from medium automotive interior trim molds to large connector mold plates and sizable forging die impressions. The 850 x 600 mm (33.5 x 23.6 in) worktable supports workpieces up to 1,500 kg (3,307 lb), accommodating heavy mold plates and die blocks.
At the heart of the EDNC-10 is Makino's HS-Rib power supply running at 80A peak current. The high-speed switching generator optimizes spark energy distribution for an effective balance of roughing speed and finishing capability. Metal removal rates during roughing are fast enough to make the machine productive on large cavities, while finishing passes achieve surface quality down to VDI 8 (Ra 0.2 µm) with proper electrode selection.
ArcFree technology continuously monitors the spark gap and prevents destructive DC arcs — a non-negotiable feature when running unattended on workpieces that may represent hundreds of hours of prior machining. SGF (Super Geometric Flushing) automatically optimizes dielectric flow based on cavity geometry, addressing one of the most challenging aspects of sinker EDM on larger work.
The machine includes a 24-position ATC for multi-electrode production strategies, a programmable three-sided drop tank with approximately 800 liters of dielectric, and Makino's Hyper-i touchscreen control. Rapid traverse runs at 3,000 mm/min (118 ipm). Machine weight is approximately 10,000 kg (22,046 lb). New pricing ranges from $350,000 to $480,000, with used EDNC-10 machines from 2010-2020 available between $150,000 and $280,000.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 600 x 450 mm X/Y travel provides a versatile envelope for both medium and large cavity work without oversizing the machine
- 80A HS-Rib generator balances roughing power and finishing capability, making the machine productive across the full cycle
- 1,500 kg workpiece capacity handles heavy mold plates and die blocks common in automotive and industrial applications
- 24-position ATC supports complex multi-electrode strategies for lights-out production across extended burn cycles
- SGF flushing automatically manages dielectric flow in larger cavities where manual strategies become impractical
- ArcFree technology protects high-value workpieces during unattended operation — critical when burning parts worth thousands of labor hours
- Strong used market with machines from 2010-2020 available at meaningful discounts from new pricing
Limitations
- 10,000 kg machine weight requires reinforced foundation and professional rigging for installation
- Price of $350K-$480K positions this as a significant capital investment requiring consistent production to justify
- 3,000 mm/min rapid traverse is slower than the EDNC-8, adding time to electrode changes on multi-tool strategies
- 800 liters of dielectric represents ongoing fluid and maintenance costs that smaller machines avoid
- Larger footprint requires adequate floor space with service access — plan for approximately 4,000 x 5,000 mm minimum

Frequently Asked Questions
01
New Makino EDNC-10 machines typically price between $350,000 and $480,000. Base machines with 24-position ATC and Hyper-i control start around $350,000. Full production configurations with C-axis head, enhanced thermal management, fire suppression, and automation interfaces approach $450,000-$480,000. Used EDNC-10 machines from 2010-2020 sell between $150,000 and $280,000.
02
The EDNC-10 steps up from the EDNC-8 with larger travel (600/450/400 mm vs 500/400/350 mm), more workpiece capacity (1,500 kg vs 1,000 kg), and a more powerful 80A generator vs 60A. The EDNC-10 also has a larger drop tank (800L vs 650L). The EDNC-8 has faster rapid traverse (5,000 vs 3,000 mm/min). Choose based on whether you need the extra envelope or the extra speed.
03
The EDNC-10 achieves surface finishes down to VDI 8 (Ra 0.2 µm) with proper electrode material and finishing parameters. Copper electrodes with multiple finishing passes are required for the finest finishes. Typical production finishes with graphite electrodes range from VDI 14-22, which is standard for cavities that will receive post-EDM polishing.
04
Yes, the EDNC-10 is well-suited for forging die applications. The 80A generator provides adequate roughing power for die impressions, and the 1,500 kg table capacity handles most forging die blocks. Large graphite electrodes up to 150 kg are supported. The 600 x 450 mm travel covers many standard forging die sizes. For the largest forging dies, step up to the EDNC-15 or EDNC-17.
05
Both are large-format production sinker EDMs. The Sodick AQ100L uses linear motor drives for faster dynamic response, while the EDNC-10 uses ballscrew drives with proven reliability. The Makino's SGF flushing and ArcFree technology are competitive advantages. The Sodick's LN2W power supply offers excellent fine-finish capability. Both achieve similar accuracy. Pricing is comparable. The decision typically comes down to existing shop infrastructure, service support, and operator preference.
