Overview
The Heller H 2000 is a 4-axis horizontal machining center from one of Germany's most respected machine tool builders. Heller has been manufacturing in Nuertingen since 1894, and the H-series represents their bread-and-butter production HMC line. The H 2000 is the smallest member of the family, sized for parts up to 720 mm diameter and 850 mm height on a 400 x 500 mm pallet, and it's built to run three shifts in automotive, aerospace, and general production environments.
Travel is 630 x 630 x 630 mm across X, Y, and Z, with rapid traverse rates up to 90 m/min — that's among the fastest in the 400-500 mm pallet HMC class and substantially quicker than machines from Mazak or Okuma in this segment. The HSK-A63 spindle delivers 40 kW (53.6 hp) of power at speeds up to 16,000 RPM with 95 Nm of torque. The 2.3-2.8 second chip-to-chip time (depending on Speed or Power configuration) keeps non-cutting time to an absolute minimum.
Heller offers the H 2000 in two configurations: Power and Speed. The Power variant optimizes for torque and material removal in heavy cutting, while the Speed variant prioritizes spindle acceleration and rapid traverse for aluminum and light-alloy work. Both share the same rigid cast-iron base and NC rotary feed table with direct drive for high-dynamics 4th-axis positioning. Pallet changing with hydraulic workpiece clamping takes about 10 seconds.
The machine carries up to 408 tools (with extended magazine) on HSK-A63 shanks, with a maximum tool length of 410 mm and maximum tool diameter of 160 mm. Maximum pallet loading is 1,200 kg across both pallets (600 kg single-sided, or 800/400 kg split). At approximately 8,500 kg machine weight, the H 2000 has the mass to absorb vibration during aggressive cutting. Heller's global service network covers Europe, North America, and Asia, with the U.S. subsidiary based in Troy, Michigan.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 90 m/min rapid traverse is among the fastest in the 400 mm pallet HMC class, dramatically reducing non-cutting time
- 16,000 RPM / 40 kW HSK-A63 spindle covers both aluminum high-speed machining and steel/cast iron work
- 2.3-2.8 second chip-to-chip time keeps tool change overhead to a minimum on multi-tool programs
- Up to 408-tool magazine capacity supports complex multi-part programs and unmanned operation
- Direct-drive rotary table provides high-dynamics 4th-axis positioning without backlash
- Power and Speed configurations let buyers optimize for their primary material and application
Limitations
- 400 x 500 mm pallet is on the smaller side — shops with parts exceeding 720 mm diameter need the H 4000 or larger
- HSK-A63 only — no BT50 or CAT50 option for shops standardized on those tool holders
- Starting price above $350K puts it significantly higher than entry-level HMCs from Korean and Taiwanese builders
- Heller's U.S. dealer presence is smaller than Mazak or Okuma — most support runs through Troy, MI
- 95 Nm spindle torque is moderate — heavy roughing in steel may require the H 4000 with its more powerful spindle

Frequently Asked Questions
01
The Power variant prioritizes torque and material removal rate for heavy cutting in steel and cast iron. The Speed variant optimizes spindle acceleration, rapid traverse, and tool change time for aluminum and light-alloy machining. Both share the same base platform and can be configured at time of order.
02
The Mazak HCN-5000 uses a larger 500 mm pallet and is widely available in North America with strong dealer support. The Heller H 2000 counters with faster rapids (90 m/min vs ~60 m/min), faster chip-to-chip times, and higher tool capacity. The Mazak has better U.S. parts and service availability.
03
Yes. With up to 408 tools, dual pallets, and Heller's automation interfaces, the H 2000 is well-suited for lights-out operation. Heller also offers pallet pool systems and FMS integration for fully automated multi-machine cells.
04
The H 2000 uses the Siemens Sinumerik 840D sl control, which is the industry standard for European-built machine tools. Heller's HMI (human-machine interface) overlays the Siemens platform with production-oriented features. Shops familiar with Siemens controls will be immediately productive.
