Overview

The GF AgieCharmilles FORM X is the compact entry-level sinker EDM in the X-series lineup, positioned between the economy FORM E and the Swiss-made FORM S. With 350 x 250 x 250 mm (13.8 x 9.8 x 9.8 in) of X/Y/Z travel, it covers the same compact envelope as the FORM E 350 but with a more capable generator and enhanced features.

The ISPG generator delivers 80A peak current with improved spark strategies compared to the FORM E version. Surface finish reaches Ra 0.10 um (4 uin), and the generator includes better electrode wear compensation algorithms that extend electrode life on production runs. GammaTEC finishing technology is available as an option.

The table accepts workpieces up to 800 x 500 x 265 mm (31.5 x 19.7 x 10.4 in) and 400 kg (882 lb), an increase over the FORM E 200 kg capacity. A 4-position Linear Tool Changer handles multi-electrode sequences, and System 3R automation integration is available.

Four-axis simultaneous interpolation with C-axis enables orbital burning and contour machining. The AC FORM HMI provides intuitive job setup and scheduling. Positioning resolution is 50 nm.

The machine weighs approximately 2,500 kg (5,512 lb) without dielectric, maintaining a compact footprint suitable for smaller shops. Rapid traverse is 4,000 mm/min on X/Y and 6,000 mm/min on Z.

New FORM X machines price between $75,000 and $110,000. Used machines from 2017-2022 trade in the $35,000-$65,000 range. The FORM X competes with entry-level Sodick and Mitsubishi sinker EDMs.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Improved ISPG generator with better electrode wear compensation extends electrode life on production runs
  • 400 kg workpiece capacity is double the FORM E 200 kg limit, handling more mold and die work
  • Compact footprint and 2,500 kg weight make installation straightforward in smaller facilities
  • Same intuitive AC FORM HMI as the entire FORM range with no retraining needed
  • Ra 0.10 um surface finish handles the majority of injection mold cavity work
  • Competitive pricing undercuts comparable Makino and Sodick sinker EDMs by $10,000-$20,000

Limitations

  • Machine tool portion manufactured in China, with only the generator and controls being Swiss
  • 80A peak current limits metal removal rate on heavy roughing applications compared to 100A+ machines
  • 4-position tool changer is basic compared to higher-end machines with 16+ positions
  • 250 mm Z-travel limits deep-cavity capability; shops doing deep-rib work should consider the FORM X 600
  • 350 mm X-travel is identical to the FORM E, so the upgrade justification is in generator quality and capacity, not envelope
05

Best For

Small to mid-size mold shops that need a step up from the FORM E with better generator performance Job shops looking for an affordable sinker EDM that handles a variety of work sizes up to 400 kg Shops doing standard injection mold cavities and stamping die inserts within the 350 x 250 mm envelope Facilities adding their first sinker EDM where the AC FORM HMI reduces the training curve Production environments running multi-electrode sequences overnight with the 4-position LTC Budget-conscious shops that want AgieCharmilles EDM technology at the most competitive price point

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does a GF AgieCharmilles FORM X cost?

New FORM X machines price between $75,000 and $110,000. Used machines from 2017-2022 trade in the $35,000-$65,000 range.

02 What is the difference between the FORM X and FORM E 350?

The FORM X offers improved ISPG generator with better electrode wear compensation, 400 kg workpiece capacity (vs 200 kg), and enhanced software features. Travel dimensions are identical at 350 x 250 x 250 mm.

03 How does the FORM X compare to the FORM S?

The FORM S is fully Swiss-made with a more advanced generator, higher peak current, tighter accuracy, and better surface finish capability. The FORM X is the affordable option. Expect $40,000-$60,000 less for the FORM X.

04 Can the FORM X handle graphite and copper electrodes?

Yes. Mix-material technology supports automated graphite-to-copper sequences. The ISPG optimizes for each material type automatically.

05 Is the FORM X suitable for unattended operation?

Yes. The 4-position LTC, AC FORM HMI scheduling, and System 3R compatibility enable unattended multi-electrode burning overnight.
