Overview

The FANUC Robodrill α-D14SiBADV Plus is the short-bed Advanced variant in FANUC’s current-production DiB Plus platform. The Si designation marks it as the compact model with 300 mm X-travel and an extended 400 mm Y-axis stroke, designed for maximum throughput on small parts in the tightest possible footprint.

This machine occupies a specific niche: ultra-high-speed production of small components where every fraction of a second matters. The 300 x 400 x 400 mm travel envelope is deliberately compact, allowing FANUC to minimize axis mass and maximize acceleration. Tool-to-tool change time hits 0.7 seconds with chip-to-chip at 1.3 seconds. Rapid traverse reaches 54 m/min across all axes. These numbers make the short-bed Robodrill one of the fastest-cycling machining platforms available.

The 31i-B Plus control delivers FANUC’s latest processing with high-speed look-ahead, AI contour control, and nano interpolation as standard. The 14-tool turret provides adequate capacity for most small-part production cycles. Spindle options span from the standard 10,000 RPM to a 24,000 RPM high-speed spindle for aluminum, with a high-torque option delivering approximately 100 Nm for steel. All spindles use BT30 taper.

New D14SiBADV Plus machines price between 75,000 USD and 120,000 USD. At approximately 1,800 kg, it is one of the lightest production machining centers available. Methods Machine Tools distributes in North America. It competes with the Brother Speedio S300X2 and Haas DM-1.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Smallest footprint in the Robodrill family enables maximum machine density in production cells
  • 0.7-second tool-to-tool change and 54 m/min rapids deliver among the fastest cycle times for small-part machining
  • 1,800 kg weight minimizes foundation requirements and simplifies installation
  • 24,000 RPM high-speed spindle option turns small aluminum parts at optimal surface speeds
  • FANUC 31i-B Plus control with AI contour control optimizes surface quality on 3D contours
  • Seamless integration with FANUC LR Mate robots for automated load/unload in compact cells

Limitations

  • 300 mm X-travel severely limits part size; purpose-built for small components only
  • 14-tool turret capacity restricts complex parts; no 21-tool option in short-bed platform
  • BT30 taper limits rigidity for aggressive cuts in steel and hard materials
  • No five-axis-ready B5 control variant in the short-bed platform

Best For

Ultra-high-volume production of small aluminum and brass components Electronics and connector manufacturing requiring rapid drill-and-tap cycles Medical device component production needing fast cycle times on small parts Automated cells with FANUC robots where floor space is at a premium Shops adding small-part overflow capacity without committing large floor space

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does Si mean?

S stands for Short, the compact-bed variant with 300 mm X-travel. Smallest Robodrill envelope, optimized for small parts where minimal axis mass enables maximum acceleration.

02 Short-bed vs medium-bed?

D14SiB has 300 mm X vs 500 mm on D14MiB. Y is 400 mm on both. Short-bed weighs less and cycles faster on small parts.

03 Can it run 5-axis?

The Si lacks the B5 five-axis control. You can add a DDR table for 3+2 positioning. For native 5-axis, look at D14MiB5 or D14LiB5.

04 Plus vs non-Plus?

Plus generation uses 31i-B Plus control with enhanced processing. Plus is the current production model.
