Overview

The FANUC Robodrill α-D14MiBADV Plus is the medium-bed Advanced variant in FANUC’s current-production DiB Plus platform. The Mi designation places it in the sweet spot with 500 mm X-travel and 400 mm Y-travel, while ADV delivers the fastest tool change times. The 14-tool turret version is the most common entry point for the Robodrill ecosystem.

The 500 x 400 x 400 mm travel envelope covers the majority of small-to-medium production parts in automotive, electronics, medical, and general manufacturing. This bread-and-butter configuration accounts for a significant share of nearly half a million Robodrills installed worldwide. The D14 means 14 tools in the servo-driven turret, changing at 0.7 seconds tool-to-tool and 1.3 seconds chip-to-chip.

Spindle options include 10,000 RPM standard, 24,000 RPM high-speed for aluminum, high-torque at approximately 100 Nm for steel, and 12,000 RPM tapping-optimized. All BT30 taper. Rapids hit 54 m/min. The 31i-B Plus control provides high-speed look-ahead, AI contour control, and nano interpolation.

At approximately 2,200 kg, it requires roughly 2,200 x 2,100 mm of floor space. New pricing is 0,000-30,000. Methods Machine Tools distributes in North America. It competes directly with the Brother Speedio S500X2, Haas DT-2, and Haas DM-2.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 500 x 400 mm X/Y travel covers the majority of small-to-medium production parts while maintaining speed
  • 0.7-second tool-to-tool change saves 15-20 minutes per shift versus conventional VMCs
  • 54 m/min rapids minimize non-cutting time over thousands of parts
  • High-torque 100 Nm spindle option enables steel machining unusual for BT30 platforms
  • 31i-B Plus with AI contour control delivers excellent surface finish on 3D contours
  • Nearly 500,000 Robodrills installed ensures exceptional parts availability and service

Limitations

  • BT30 taper limits rigidity for heavy roughing in hardened steel and cast iron
  • 14-tool turret may be insufficient for complex parts; D21 has 21 tools
  • FANUC 31i has a steeper learning curve than Haas or Mazak controls
  • 400 mm Z-travel may restrict tall fixtures or deep-cavity parts

Frequently Asked Questions

01 D14MiBADV Plus vs D21MiB5ADV?

D14 has 14 tools; D21 has 21 plus B5 five-axis-ready control. D21 has 330 mm Z vs 400 mm. Choose D14 for simpler parts; D21 for complex or 5-axis work.

02 ADV Plus vs standard?

ADV achieves 0.7s tool-to-tool vs 0.9s standard. Includes high-speed look-ahead, AI contour control, and nano interpolation as standard.

03 Can it cut steel?

Yes, especially with the 100 Nm high-torque spindle. Shops cut mild steel, 4140, stainless with lighter cuts at higher speeds.

04 North American service?

Methods Machine Tools is the primary distributor for sales, service, and automation integration.
