Overview

The WFL M80 MILLTURN is a complete-machining multi-tasking machine built in Linz, Austria, that combines turning, milling, boring, drilling, gear hobbing, and deep hole drilling in a single setup. WFL is the only machine tool builder in the world that focuses exclusively on multi-tasking turn-mill centers, and the M80 is their mid-range workhorse — large enough for serious aerospace and energy components, compact enough to fit in a production cell without dominating the shop floor.

The M80 features a turning passage of 1,000 mm in diameter with an X-axis stroke of 1,050 mm and Y-axis stroke of 650 mm. Center distances range from 1,000 mm to 8,000 mm depending on configuration, making it versatile enough for short chucking work as well as long shaft components. The 90 kW turning spindle delivers enormous torque for heavy roughing in titanium, Inconel, and hardened steels, while the 58 kW milling spindle with an active B-axis (swiveling from -110° to +90°) handles complex angular features, gear teeth, and interpolated boring operations.

WFL engineered the M80 around minimized distances between the tool and workpiece and the machine bed, combined with the widest possible guideway spacing. This geometry optimizes rigidity and cuts vibration — critical when you're milling a gear profile at one end of a 2-meter shaft while the tailstock supports the other end. The machine delivers 150 bar through-spindle coolant pressure as standard, essential for deep hole drilling and chip evacuation in demanding materials. Even tools up to 35 kg can be changed safely and quickly through the automatic tool changer.

All center distances except 1,000 mm are available with a counter spindle for complete part-done machining, and an additional tool turret can be specified for simultaneous operations. The Siemens SINUMERIK control platform is standard, with WFL's proprietary machining cycles for gear cutting, thread whirling, and crankshaft machining. Compared to the Mazak Integrex e-series or DMG Mori CTX beta TC, the M80 offers significantly larger work envelopes and heavier cutting capacity, positioned for the aerospace tier 1 supplier and energy equipment manufacturer who needs true complete machining in one setup.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • True complete machining in one setup — turning, milling, boring, gear cutting, deep hole drilling — eliminates multiple setups and inter-operation handling
  • 1,000 mm turning diameter and up to 8,000 mm between centers handles large aerospace shafts, turbine components, and energy equipment
  • 90 kW turning spindle and 58 kW milling spindle deliver enough power for heavy roughing in titanium and Inconel
  • 150 bar through-spindle coolant is standard, essential for deep hole drilling and chip control in superalloys
  • Active B-axis (-110° to +90°) enables complex angular features, gear profiles, and off-axis boring operations
  • WFL's exclusive focus on multi-tasking machines means every engineering resource goes into this machine class

Limitations

  • Price point of $1.2-3.5M puts it well beyond the reach of general job shops — this is aerospace and energy production equipment
  • Machine complexity requires highly skilled operators and programmers with multi-tasking experience
  • Lead times for new M80 orders can stretch 12-18 months due to WFL's production capacity
  • WFL's service network is smaller than Mazak or DMG Mori — North American support relies on a limited number of field service engineers
  • The machine's capability often exceeds what standard CAM packages can program — specialized post-processors and WFL-specific cycles are required

Best For

Aerospace tier 1 suppliers machining landing gear components, turbine shafts, and structural fittings in titanium and Inconel Energy equipment manufacturers producing turbine rotors, generator shafts, and valve bodies in a single setup Oil and gas component shops machining long, complex shafts with integrated gear features and deep cross-holes Defense contractors requiring complete machining of classified components without inter-operation transport between machines High-value, low-volume production where setup time elimination and geometric accuracy justify the investment

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What makes the M80 different from a Mazak Integrex?

The M80 offers a significantly larger work envelope (1,000 mm turning diameter vs ~660 mm on the Integrex i-200) and heavier cutting capacity. WFL's 150 bar coolant, 35 kg tool capacity, and gear hobbing capability are standard features that require significant option packages on the Integrex. The Mazak is better suited for mid-size production turning-milling, while the M80 is built for large, complex aerospace and energy components.

02 What center distance should I specify?

Match the center distance to your longest part plus tooling clearance. The 2,000 mm and 3,000 mm configurations are most popular for aerospace work. The 6,000-8,000 mm versions are specialized for long shafts, generator rotors, and similar extended components. Longer center distances increase floor space and cost but don't affect rigidity on shorter parts.

03 Can the M80 cut gears?

Yes. WFL's proprietary gear hobbing and gear milling cycles run on the Siemens control and use the B-axis to position standard or special gear cutting tools. The machine can produce spur gears, helical gears, splines, and internal gears. Quality is typically DIN 6-8, suitable for most industrial applications though not for automotive transmission-quality gearing.

04 What skill level is needed to operate and program the M80?

The M80 requires experienced CNC machinists with specific multi-tasking training. WFL offers comprehensive training programs at their Linz facility and on-site. Programming typically uses high-end CAM software (Siemens NX, Mastercam, or ESPRIT) with WFL-specific post-processors. Plan for 3-6 months of training before full production capability.

05 What is the typical lead time for a new M80?

Lead times range from 12-18 months depending on configuration and WFL's backlog. WFL builds each machine to order at their Linz, Austria facility. Used M80s are rare on the secondary market, as owners tend to keep them for decades. Plan procurement well in advance of production needs.
