Overview

The Hurco TMX8MYi is the flagship 8-inch chuck mill-turn machine in Hurco's current lineup, combining a powerful spindle, Y-axis, C-axis, and BMT65 live tooling in a package designed for job shops that want to complete complex parts in a single setup. It represents the best of what Hurco offers in the mill-turn space — production-grade turning performance with genuine milling capability and the WinMax conversational control that makes it all accessible.

The main spindle delivers 27.8 kW (37.3 hp) with 239 Nm (176.3 ft-lbs) of torque at 1,000 RPM, topping out at 4,500 RPM. That's serious power for an 8-inch chuck machine, and it means you can take aggressive cuts in steel and stainless without worrying about stalling. The BMT65 turret carries 12 stations of live tooling spinning at up to 5,000 RPM with 6.4 kW (8.5 hp) at 2,190 RPM.

The Y-axis adds 55 mm (+/- 27.5 mm) of off-center travel, which is the feature that separates true mill-turn from simple live tooling. With the Y-axis, you can mill pockets with flat bottoms and straight walls, cut hex features, machine keyways, and perform off-center drilling — operations that are impossible on C-axis-only machines. Maximum turning diameter is 336 mm (13.2 in) with a turning length of 530 mm (20.9 in).

Travels are 286 mm (11.3 in) in X, 560 mm (22 in) in Z, 55 mm in Y, and 640 mm (25.2 in) in W (tailstock). The machine weighs 4,125 kg (9,095 lb), providing solid rigidity for both turning and milling operations. A spindle chiller maintains thermal stability during extended production runs, and absolute encoders on all axes eliminate the need for homing on startup.

The WinMax control is where the TMX8MYi really shines. Programming mill-turn parts on most other platforms requires CAM software and significant programming expertise. WinMax lets operators define both turning and milling operations conversationally, blend G-code where needed, and get parts running faster. The TMX8MYi competes with the Haas ST-20Y, Doosan Lynx 2100Y, Mazak QT-200MY, and DN Solutions Lynx 2100SY.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Y-axis enables true mill-turn operations including off-center pockets, hex features, and keyways that C-axis-only machines cannot produce
  • 37.3 hp spindle with 239 Nm torque handles production-grade turning in steel and stainless without compromise
  • BMT65 turret provides superior rigidity over VDI tooling for live milling operations
  • WinMax conversational control makes mill-turn programming accessible to operators without CAM expertise
  • 5,000 RPM live tools with 8.5 hp deliver real milling capability, not just light cross-drilling
  • Spindle chiller and absolute encoders provide thermal stability and instant-on readiness for production environments

Limitations

  • 55 mm Y-axis travel is limited compared to 100+ mm on larger mill-turn platforms — deep pockets may not be reachable
  • 4,500 RPM main spindle speed is adequate but not fast for small-diameter aluminum high-speed turning
  • 51 mm bar capacity limits bar feeding to smaller stock — some shops need 65 mm or more
  • 12-station turret can fill up quickly when running complex mill-turn programs with many turning and milling tools
  • Hurco dealer network is smaller than Haas, Mazak, and Doosan for service coverage in some areas

Best For

Job shops producing complete parts with turning and milling features in a single setup to eliminate secondary operations Shops without dedicated CAM programmers that value WinMax conversational programming for mill-turn work Medical device manufacturers producing precision components with turned profiles and milled features Firearms component shops completing barrels, receivers, and fittings with both turned and milled geometry Prototype and R&D departments needing versatile single-setup capability with fast programming turnaround Shops stepping up from C-axis-only live tooling to full Y-axis mill-turn capability

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does a Hurco TMX8MYi cost?

A new Hurco TMX8MYi typically sells between $130,000 and $175,000 depending on options. Key options affecting price include tailstock, chip conveyor, through-spindle coolant, and tooling packages. Used TMX8MYi machines trade between $70,000 and $110,000.

02 What is the difference between the TMX8MYi and TMX8MYSi?

The TMX8MYSi adds a sub-spindle for complete done-in-one machining. The sub-spindle grabs the part from the main spindle, and the machine completes operations on the back side of the part. The TMX8MYi uses a tailstock instead of a sub-spindle. The sub-spindle version costs approximately $30,000-$50,000 more.

03 How does the TMX8MYi compare to the Haas ST-20Y?

Both are 8-inch chuck Y-axis mill-turn machines at similar price points. The Hurco delivers more spindle power (37.3 hp vs 20 hp on the Haas) and WinMax conversational programming. The Haas wins on purchase price, dealer network, and parts availability. For shops that value at-the-machine programming and spindle power, the Hurco is the better choice.

04 What is a BMT65 turret and why does it matter?

BMT (Base Mount Tooling) is a turret standard that mounts tools to a flat face rather than a VDI wedge lock. BMT65 provides better rigidity, repeatability, and tool-change accuracy than VDI, especially for live milling operations. The stiffer tool mounting produces better surface finishes and longer tool life during milling.

05 Can the TMX8MYi replace a separate lathe and mill for most parts?

For parts within its turning envelope (336 mm diameter, 530 mm length) with milling features within 55 mm Y-travel, yes. This covers the majority of job shop work. Parts requiring heavy 3D milling, complex contoured surfaces, or large milling envelopes still benefit from a dedicated VMC.
