Overview
The DN Solutions SMX 5100 LB is the big-bore variant of the SMX 5100 L, stepping up to a 21-inch chuck for the largest workholding capacity in DN Solutions' multi-tasking lineup. The B designation means big bore — and at 21 inches, you're gripping pipe flanges, large valve bodies, and heavy forged components that no standard multi-tasking machine can handle.
The main spindle runs at 1,500 RPM with 37 kW (49.6 hp) and an extraordinary 4,200 Nm (3,098 ft-lbs) of torque. That's the spindle torque of a heavy-duty engine lathe packed into a multi-tasking platform with B-axis milling. The lower RPM is the trade-off for that massive torque — you're geared for heavy metal removal on large diameters, not high-speed small-part turning.
Max turning diameter is 830 mm (32.7 in) with 3,050 mm (120 in) of turning length. At 33,000 kg (72,752 lb), the LB is 2,000 kg heavier than the standard L variant. The footprint stays at 9,222 x 3,597 x 3,346 mm — same as the L — with the extra mass concentrated in the heavier spindle assembly and larger chuck mechanism.
The B-axis milling spindle still delivers 12,000 RPM for angular milling and cross-drilling, giving you genuine machining center capability on parts that would otherwise need crane moves between a VTL and a boring mill. The FANUC 31i-B5 control with CUFOS handles 5-axis simultaneous machining.
The LB configuration serves a specific market: heavy industry shops that need multi-tasking on very large-diameter parts. Power generation, mining equipment, marine propulsion, and oil and gas wellhead manufacturing are the core applications. If you're moving parts between a large lathe and a horizontal boring mill, the SMX 5100 LB can replace both machines for many jobs.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 21-inch chuck grips the largest-diameter workpieces available on any DN Solutions multi-tasking platform
- 4,200 Nm of spindle torque delivers heavy-duty engine lathe cutting force on a multi-tasking machine
- 3,050 mm turning length with 830 mm diameter handles the biggest parts in heavy industry applications
- B-axis milling at 12,000 RPM eliminates separate boring mill setups for cross-holes and angular features
- 33,000 kg mass provides exceptional rigidity and vibration damping for heavy cutting on large forgings
- Can replace a large lathe and horizontal boring mill for many large-diameter parts, consolidating two machines into one
Limitations
- 1,500 RPM spindle speed severely limits surface footage — not suitable for small-diameter or high-speed turning
- 33,000 kg weight demands a heavy-duty foundation engineered specifically for this machine
- No sub spindle — tailstock support only, so back-working requires manual rechucking
- Highest price in the standard-length SMX 5100 family due to the heavy-duty spindle and 21-inch chuck assembly
- Loading and unloading 21-inch chuck workpieces requires overhead crane access

Frequently Asked Questions
01
New machines run $600,000 to $800,000 depending on configuration. The 21-inch chuck and heavy-duty spindle assembly carry a premium over the standard 15-inch L variant. Foundation costs ($40-100K) and rigging/installation ($20-40K) are significant additional expenses.
02
The 21-inch chuck and 4,200 Nm torque specification demands different gearing than the standard 15-inch variant. At large diameters (600-830 mm), you only need 300-600 RPM for proper surface speed on steel. The 1,500 RPM top speed provides adequate SFM for all reasonable part diameters at this chuck size.
03
The LB steps up from a 15-inch to 21-inch chuck, drops spindle speed from 2,400 to 1,500 RPM, and increases torque from 1,643 to 4,200 Nm. Same 37 kW power, same turning diameter and length, same B-axis milling. The LB is 2,000 kg heavier. Choose it when your parts require the 21-inch chuck's gripping range.
04
Yes. The 33,000 kg machine mass, 4,200 Nm spindle torque, and robust guideway construction handle heavy interrupted cutting well. The B-axis milling head also provides rigid milling capability for heavy face milling and pocket milling on large workpieces. For the heaviest interrupted cuts, consider using reduced parameters during entry to protect the tooling.
