Overview
The Brother Speedio R450X1 is a rotational machining center with integrated turning capability, combining an A-axis rotary table with a turning spindle to handle multi-face and rotational parts in a single setup. It is the base X1 generation predecessor to the R450Xd1.
X/Y/Z travels are 450 x 300 x 305 mm. The milling spindle runs at 16,000 rpm with 7.5 kW on BT30 taper. The A-axis rotary table provides +/- 120 degrees of tilt for multi-face milling access, while the C-axis turning spindle enables turned features on the same workpiece. The 21-tool turret delivers fast tool changes.
Rapids are 50 m/min on X/Y and 56 m/min on Z. The CNC-C00 control manages simultaneous 4-axis mill-turn operations including C-axis indexing and A-axis contouring.
The R-series represents a unique niche in the Speedio lineup — parts that need both rotational machining (multi-face access via A-axis) and turning capability in one compact machine. This positions it above a standard S-series VMC but below a full multitasking machine in capability and cost.
The X1 generation base model is well established with a large installed base. Used machines offer strong value for shops needing this combined capability.
New machines (when available) price $115,000-$155,000. Used units from 2014-2020 trade $45,000-$85,000.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Unique combination of A-axis rotary and C-axis turning in one machine
- Multi-face milling and turning without re-fixturing
- 0.9s chip-to-chip maintains high milling productivity
- CNC-C00 handles complex simultaneous mill-turn-rotate operations
- Proven platform with large installed base and established service network
- Price significantly below full multitasking machines with similar capability
Limitations
- A-axis limited to +/- 120 degrees — not full simultaneous 5-axis
- Y-travel (300 mm) is more restrictive than S-series equivalents
- BT30 limits milling force on hard materials
- Turning diameter limited versus dedicated lathes
- X1 generation is two revisions behind current XD2 machines

Frequently Asked Questions
01
New $115,000-$155,000. Used $45,000-$85,000.
02
The Xd1 introduced servo dynamic improvements. Mechanically similar; Xd1 performs better in high-acceleration multi-tool cycles.
03
Yes, it combines A-axis rotary milling and C-axis turning in one machine. Turning capacity is smaller than a dedicated lathe but sufficient for most combined-operation parts.
04
The A-axis and C-axis enable 4+1 style machining. Full simultaneous 5-axis is not the primary design intent of this machine.
05
Dependent on A-axis geometry and tooling; approximately 150-200 mm practical turning diameter for most setups.
